Onimusha Way of the Sword Launch – out now!

It has been a very long wait, but Onimusha is finally back. Onimusha: Way of the Sword is now available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC, bringing Capcom’s samurai action series back with an entirely new adventure.

And if you’ve been following the game since it was announced, today’s launch is the chance to finally step into its twisted version of Edo-period Kyoto.

At A Glance

  • Game: Onimusha: Way of the Sword
  • Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, PC, Play Anywhere
  • Price: £64.99
  • Publisher: Capcom
  • Developer: Capcom
  • Genre: Action Adventure

A Samurai In A Twisted Kyoto

Way of the Sword follows Miyamoto Musashi as he arrives in Kyoto, only to find the historic city engulfed by a supernatural threat. Malevolent Malice has transformed familiar locations, while Genma creatures from the underworld have begun spilling into the world of the living.

Musashi isn’t exactly short on confidence, but his journey soon takes an unexpected turn when he becomes the bearer of the Oni Gauntlet. The mystical artefact gives him the power to take on the Genma and absorb their souls, although Musashi would rather rely on his own skill with the sword.

That creates the foundation for a dark fantasy adventure packed with blood-soaked battles, mysterious locations and some very dangerous enemies.

The Sword Is The Star

Combat is very much at the heart of Way of the Sword. Musashi can parry, dodge and deflect attacks, while the series’ trademark Issen counterattacks return to reward players who can get their timing just right.

The Oni Gauntlet also provides additional abilities, while absorbed souls can be used to enhance Musashi. As the adventure progresses, there are further Oni Armaments and abilities to discover, giving you more ways to approach both combat and exploration.

A Long-Awaited Return

This isn’t just another new game from Capcom. Way of the Sword marks the first new instalment in the Onimusha series in around 20 years, making its arrival a significant one for anyone who remembers the original games.

We first covered the game’s return when Onimusha: Way of the Sword was announced back in 2024, before following it through development and including it among the best new Xbox and Game Pass games for September 2026.

Now, the wait is over.

And We’ve Already Played It

There’s another rather important piece of the puzzle here – we’ve already reviewed Onimusha: Way of the Sword, awarding it an impressive 4.5/5.

The review praised the satisfying combat, beautiful environments and engaging characters, while noting some pacing issues along the way. Most importantly, though, the swordplay proved to be the game’s real strength, with well-timed counters, dodges and Issen attacks making Musashi feel devastating when everything clicks.

So this isn’t one we’re sending you into blindly. If you’re wondering whether Capcom has successfully revived the Onimusha name, our full Onimusha: Way of the Sword review has the answer.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is available now on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC, with the Standard Edition priced at £64.99 via the Xbox Store. Alongside that though is the Deluxe Edition for £74.99. That includes the full game and Deluxe Kit, featuring three charms, four sword appearances, the Red Armor outfit for Musashi and the Crimson Lotus Oni Gauntlet.

And then we have the Premium Deluxe Edition, sitting at £84.99. That one includes the full game and everything in the Deluxe Kit, plus three additional haori outfits for Musashi, three outfits for Okuni, three outfits for the Oni Lady and the mini digital soundtrack.

Unfortunately, at launch, you won’t find Onimusha: Way of the Sword as part of your Game Pass package.

After two decades away, Onimusha is back where it belongs – with a sword in hand, demons to kill and an awful lot of blood on the floor.
