Override: Mech City Brawl and Red Faction II go free via Xbox Games With Gold

Yes it’s the middle of the month, yes we’ve all got a ton of games available to play, but when the Xbox Games With Gold scheme switches lanes to deliver two new free Xbox titles to all players, it shouldn’t be ignored. And that’s where we are here and now with the freebies of Override: Mech City Brawl and Red Faction II.

Stripped of their price tags for the foreseeable future, Override: Mech City Brawl and Red Faction II are the latest titles to make the most of the joy of Games With Gold to ensure that Xbox players looking for extra additions to their digital library can do so without need for paying out any kind of cash.

Following on from the price removals to both Portal Knights and MX Unleashed at the start of the month, Override: Mech City Brawl is the highlight here with the usual £24.99 price tag stripped from under itself until the middle of September. A game that was released by Modus Games back at the end of 2018, Override: Mech City Brawl gives you the chance to take control of a swathe of gigantic robots, before battling it out across multiple scenarios. With local and online versus modes, cooperative play and a single player campaign, becoming a robot in disguise has never been so much fun as you destroy arenas and your foes with a rather fun mech battler.

Yes it may have struggled to make much impact upon first launch, but with it now being free to download, we’re pretty certain that the huge amount of customisation and unlocks, and unique style it delivers, is going to ensure a whole host of new players get involved. Just make sure you flash your Xbox Live Gold membership at the Xbox Store door over the course of the next few weeks and you too could be robot fighting before you know it.

Kicking along nicely alongside Override is the other free title for August, that of Red Faction II. A native OG Xbox title that first released nearly 20 years ago, chances are this is only going to really appeal to a select number of Xbox One gamers, as the power of Backwards Compatibility ensures it is playable on Xbox One. You see, two decades on, don’t expect a smooth, modern day experience, but if you are looking to take a trip to Mars and wish to take in some first person shooting, for free, you may as well take in the download.

You’ve got until the end of August to nab yourself a free copy of Red Faction II on Xbox – after that, the price goes straight back up again. Just get over to the Xbox Store and take the freebies home.

As always, let us know what you think of the latest free titles to hit Xbox via the Games With Gold scheme for August 2020. The comments section is down below.

Red Faction II Description:

Twenty-second century Earth. Five years after the rebellion on Mars. For the last 15 years, Sopot, the corrupt dictator, has oppressed the people of the Commonwealth. His relentless pursuit of unification with the neighboring United Republic has left the country soaked in unnecessary bloodshed and poverty. Propaganda is plastered throughout communities and a Public Information Building, built as a tribute to the self-centered chancellor, spews news broadcasts with claims of victory as more and more soldiers fall victim. Fed up after years on the front lines, a group of super-soldiers injected with nanotechnology vow to replace the dictator and restore peace. Defend your country as Alias, a demolitions expert, with the help of your five squad members, each specializing in their own method of destruction. Fight through diverse levels using vehicles, an arsenal of specialized weapons and massive explosives in your rampage to overthrow the government.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
