PEPPERED – now on console

Most platformers let you try again. Miss a jump? Reset. Lose a boss fight? Go again. PEPPERED: An Existential Platformer throws that safety net out of the window and asks a far more uncomfortable question – what if failure actually mattered?

Now available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch for £12.49, this strange, sharp and surprisingly funny adventure brings its “one shot” philosophy to console after earning Overwhelmingly Positive reviews on Steam.

Fail Forward, Whether You Like It Or Not

At the heart of PEPPERED is a simple but bold idea – there are no do-overs.

Every jump, every decision, every boss fight plays out once. Win or lose, the game keeps moving, folding your successes and failures into the story. Lose a major encounter? That’s not a restart screen , that’s your new reality.

It creates a very different kind of tension. You’re not just trying to succeed; you’re constantly aware that whatever happens next is permanent, and the story will adapt around it.

Saving The World… Sort Of

The setup is as odd as the mechanics. You’re an office intern who decides, for reasons that feel both noble and slightly misguided, to save the world. The problem? Nobody asked you to.

Instead of being welcomed as a hero, you’re chased by authorities, branded a threat, and thrown into a chaotic sequence of events that spirals in increasingly bizarre directions. It’s a narrative that leans heavily into absurdity, but there’s an undercurrent of something more reflective beneath it all.

Platforming With Consequences

On a mechanical level, PEPPERED is still very much a platformer – run, jump, avoid hazards, and try not to fall flat on your face.

But it’s the consequences that change everything. Boss fights are particularly unforgiving, offering no second chances. If you lose, the story shifts, sometimes dramatically, opening up entirely new paths, characters or scenarios you wouldn’t have seen otherwise.

Add in stealth sections, branching dialogue, and unexpected gameplay twists, and it quickly becomes clear this isn’t a straightforward experience.

A World That Doesn’t Quite Make Sense

Part of the charm comes from how unpredictable everything is.

One moment you might be navigating a tense stealth segment, the next you’re dealing with something completely off-the-wall; a shopping cart escape, a strange conversation, or a situation that feels like it shouldn’t exist in any game at all.

It’s chaotic, but intentionally so. The world of PEPPERED is filled with odd characters and strange moments, all tied together by the idea that things don’t always go the way you expect.

One Shot To See It Through

PEPPERED: An Existential Platformer stands out not because it reinvents platforming, but because it reframes how you approach it.

It asks you to accept mistakes, live with consequences, and see where the story takes you rather than constantly trying to correct it. That won’t be for everyone, but for those willing to embrace the idea, it offers something genuinely different.

Just remember: whatever happens… you don’t get to take it back.

PEPPERED is on the usual stores right now, with the Xbox Store sorting you out if you want to play on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
