Original Article – March 21st 2025

Get ready to raise some hell, again, as Painkiller is on the way.

3D Realms, Saber Interactive, and Anshar Studios have announced a new Painkiller game, a modern reimagining of the classic, over-the-top FPS.

Simply titled Painkiller, this new entry promises to deliver the same fast-paced, gory action the series is known for, with updated visuals, new gameplay mechanics, and even co-op! It’s coming to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam in Fall 2025.

The original Painkiller was a cult classic, known for its intense combat, brutal weapons, and hordes of demonic enemies. This new title looks to recapture that spirit, throwing players into the role of a soul sentenced to Purgatory. Your only chance at redemption? To stop the fallen angel Azazel’s invasion of Earth. Sounds simple enough, right?

Welcome to Purgatory, Your New Playground

The new Painkiller will feature a variety of spine-chilling biomes to battle through, from gothic environments to, well, we can only imagine what other horrors await. You’ll face hordes of demons and titanic terrors, including the monstrous Nephilim, the children of Azazel.

But you won’t be going in unarmed. The game promises an arsenal of infernal weapons, including nods to the original Painkiller’s arsenal plus entirely new creations. Expect plenty of over-the-top firepower to help you paint the walls red. You’ll be jumping, dashing and hooking about, so movement will be key.

Solo or Co-op Carnage

For the first time in the series, Painkiller will feature online co-op for up to three players. You can team up with friends to tackle the campaign, or play solo if you prefer to face the demonic hordes alone. And it’ll even offer offline play with bots, ensuring you can always experience the carnage, regardless of your internet connection.

Choose Your Character, Unleash Your Pain

Painkiller will feature four distinct playable characters: Ink, Void, Sol, and Roch. Each character will have unique perks that boost their energy, health, power, or damage, allowing for different playstyles and strategic choices.

You’ll also be able to upgrade your abilities using tarot cards, rank up to expand your arsenal, and, of course, team up with other players to obliterate your foes.

Key Features to Get Your Blood Pumping

  • Purgatory Is Your Playground: Jump, dash and hook across vast, spine-chilling biomes while fighting nightmarish enemies in bloody, fast-paced combat with a host of new and classic Painkiller weapons.
  • Grotesque Terrors Await: Challenge a variety of horrifying foes, from hordes of demons to titanic terrors like the monstrous children of Azazel – the Nephilim.
  • Unleash The Pain: Use tarot cards to upgrade your abilities, rank up to expand your arsenal, and team up with other players to obliterate your foes.
  • Choose Your Character Wisely: Play as one of four distinctive characters – Ink, Void, Sol and Roch – and take advantage of their unique perks to boost your energy, health, power and damage.
  • Online Co-op & Solo Play: Play online with up to two friends or offline with bots, exploring diverse locations, uncovering secrets and facing off against terrifying enemies.

Get Ready to Redeem Your Soul (With Extreme Prejudice)

Painkiller is slated for release in Fall 2025 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam.

This is one to watch for fans of classic FPS action, over-the-top violence, and a healthy dose of demonic mayhem. Prepare to unleash the pain.

I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
