2026's Best Games

It’s been a good few years since we first had the chance to go hands-on with Prison Architect, with the Xbox One version rocking up way back in 2016. Since that time though there have been multiple updates and expansions for the game, as the teams at Paradox Interactive and Double Eleven continued to push it on to great things. That is what is happening again here now, as the Prison Architect: Island Bound expansion arrives.

Available for Prison Architect on Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC, the Island Bound expansion allows players to build island compounds without needing an access road. Now, you get the chance to reimagine your prison’s design and logistics with the addition of ships and helicopters that can handle transportation. Further to that and we find Island Bound also introducing more buildings, security options, construction opportunities, and prison customization that expands on the already very good gameplay.

Priced up at ÂŁ8.39, Island Bound’s key features include:

  • Sea and Air: Upgrade your prison’s logistics with a variety of ferry and helicopter transport options that deliver supplies and inmates directly to docking areas around your compound. But be aware, there are now more access points to sneak contraband into the prison.
  • Chain Link Up: Maximize your prison’s efficiency by linking docks, helipads, and roads to specific deliveries. You can even toggle what services are available to each delivery point within your compound. Players can put these features to use in new or existing prisons.
  • Supermax Security: New security objects make it easier to search deliveries and prisoners as they enter the prison, or at key security checkpoints. Additional emergency services can be called when things get out of hand.
  • Island Life: Customize your Island or Connected Island Plot with over fifteen nautical tiles and objects. Shape the land around your compound with moats, rivers, and lakes for security, or for style — no access roads needed!
  • The Rock: Manage the world’s most famous prison with two premade maps: Alcatraz Prison and Alcatraz Island.

Sitting in place and launching alongside this latest expansion is further free content too. The Rock will cost you nothing, but it allows for all prisoners to receive Dynamic Reputations. This means that prisoners have a chance to gain or lose a reputation trait based on their behaviours. The update also includes additional objects and tiles that you can use to customize your precious prisons even more.

In order to enjoy what Island Bound is providing then you will of course need the base game of Prison Architect to hand. Whether you have that on Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch or PC matters little – just fire it up and prepare for a whole new world of customisation and exploration.
