Some shoot ‘em ups want players to avoid danger. Psyvariar 3 actively rewards you for flying directly into it.
Now available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC for £16.74, Psyvariar 3 marks the long-awaited return of one of arcade gaming’s stranger and most distinctive shmup series – one built almost entirely around the art of getting dangerously close to enemy fire without exploding.
Published by Red Art Games and developed by Banana Bytes, Psyvariar 3 revives the franchise more than two decades after the original first arrived in Japanese arcades back in 2000.
That buzz mechanic is still at the centre of everything too!

Risk Equals Reward
For anyone unfamiliar with the Psyvariar series, the big hook has always been bullet grazing.
Instead of simply dodging incoming attacks, players are encouraged to skim dangerously close to enemy projectiles in order to build score multipliers, trigger shield chains and power up their ship.
It creates a very different feel compared to more traditional vertical shooters. The best players are not the ones hiding safely in corners – they are the ones weaving through impossible walls of bullets while somehow keeping complete control.
Psyvariar 3 builds on that formula with updated controls, modernised movement systems and multiple playable characters, each carrying their own weapons, abilities and scoring styles.
Cotton Joins The Fight
One of the more unexpected additions comes in the form of Cotton protagonist Cotton herself, arriving as a fully playable guest character complete with her own ship and mechanics. It is a nice crossover for shmup fans, especially given how closely tied both franchises are to arcade shooter history.
Elsewhere, players can expect:
- Seven playable pilots
- Multiple game modes including Arcade, Endless, Mission and Caravan
- Dynamic difficulty routes
- Seven large areas with evolving boss encounters
- Updated “Roll” mechanics built for modern controllers
There is also 120fps support available on Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2 for players equipped with compatible displays.
Built By Developers Who Know Shooters
Banana Bytes may already be familiar to shmup fans thanks to Sophstar, a game we reviewed positively, praising both its challenge and the amount of variety packed into its systems.
That experience seems to have translated naturally into Psyvariar 3, which appears designed very much for players who enjoy mastering mechanics, chasing scores and gradually learning how to survive increasingly absurd bullet patterns.
The genre has changed a lot since Psyvariar first appeared in arcades, but there is still something hugely satisfying about a pure score-chasing shooter built around mechanical skill. Especially one asking players to fly directly into danger on purpose.
For long-time arcade fans, this is not just another retro throwback. It is the return of a cult shooter series that always stood slightly apart from the pack.
You’ll find Psyvariar 3 on the usual storefronts. Let us point you the way of the Xbox Store so you can get a download in.
