Sometimes, a game mechanic comes along, and you think, “Why hasn’t anyone thought of this before?”. Who was the first person to think of checkpoints in games? Or when did a game developer first have the idea of spawn points in multiplayer games?
Some games innovate and change how games are played forever. No one would have imagined the success of something as simple, yet original, as Tetris, for example.

pureya is another game that does something unique: you play a series of mini-arcade games, but only for 10 seconds at a time. It’s incredibly addictive and a lot of fun.
This game is all about speed, and a cutscene plays as soon as you load it up, telling you the story. An unnamed little girl is playing with a marble-based toy, however she has run out of marbles from her bowl. She finds another bowl, but it tips over, and the marbles scatter everywhere. They spill into her toys and all over the room. The game then plays from the perspective of the girl’s imagination as she envisions rescuing the marbles from the toys around the room. It’s a crazy, almost abstract premise, but it works!
You’re then thrown into a series of different arcade games where you have to try and collect marbles as you go. There are no instructions or guides for these games; you learn by playing. But don’t worry, they’re not complicated, and you’ll only use two buttons or fewer in each game. And remember, you only have 10 seconds in each game before it moves on to the next!

Some of these games (over 30 of which you unlock throughout pureya) have a very arcade-like feel to them. They remind of Atari console games from the early 1980s. Examples include a shooting game where you destroy asteroids to collect marbles, a penguin platforming across the ice, guiding a paper aeroplane through the sky, and driving a speedboat across a lake.
Each of these games is fun, challenging, and addictive and as you progress, you unlock more games, and the cycle continues. There’s even an infinity mode where you can play any of the games for as long as you like.
The graphics utilise a pixel art style reminiscent of those classic arcade games. The bright colours and distinct worlds create a vibrant, retro aesthetic. There are small customizations you can unlock too, such as a little winter jumper for a goat in one level. And – as you may expect to hear – the sound design is reminiscent of classic arcade games as well, with pureya allowing you to disable individual tracks if you prefer.

pureya is a wonderfully simple concept that’s incredibly addictive. You’ll find yourself wanting to improve at each game, even within the short time limit and it’s the unpredictable nature of the game that is a big part of its charm; there is something marvellous about not knowing what you’re going to get each time. While I’m not sure about the long-term appeal, the low price makes pureya a worthwhile purchase; a quick hit and adrenaline rush.
If you have a short attention span and enjoy fast-paced, challenging action, then pureya is likely to be perfect for you.
