The Evolution of an Italian Horror Saga

The Remothered series has had its ups and downs. The first game, released in 2018 on consoles was that of Remothered: Tormented Fathers. Developed by the Italian company Stormind, the game was a homage to those classic Japanese survival horrors like Clock Tower. It followed a mother looking for her daughter in a mansion.

Horrific twists and turns were revealed, and critics and gamers spoke highly of it. And since then the game has spawned comic books of the franchise, podcasts, and audiobooks. The maker of Silent Hill, Keiichiro Toyama, even praised the game’s horror roots and wanted to collaborate with the makers on future projects.

In 2020, a sequel was released – Remothered: Broken Porcelain, but it wasn’t so well received and disappointed some of the fan base.

But don’t despair because Stormind are back after working successfully on games like A Quiet Place and Mafia: The Old Country. That team were kind enough to invite me to attend a showcase event for Remothered: Ren Nun’s Legacy; an event in which we got to see a trailer for the game, some gameplay, and have the opportunity to quiz the team. So what do we know?

Remothered: Ren Nun’s Legacy is the third and final part of this trilogy, and hopes to wrap up the storyline and answer all the questions people had left over from the previous two games.

Remothered was the first game we developed at the very beginning of our journey, and after our experiences with A Quiet Place and Mafia: The Old Country, we returned to the series because we couldn’t accept seeing Remothered fade away,” said Stormind CEO Antonio Cannata. “We decided to make this game out of a strong sense of respect and responsibility toward Remothered and its community, who thought this project had been abandoned.

A Standalone Finale

They are also keen to point out that Red Nun’s Legacy can be played as a standalone experience even if you haven’t played the first two. The game is set 20 years into the timeline, and you play the part of Susan, a mother who is once again looking for her daughter. It won’t come as a surprise to hear that Susan is exploring a creepy convent. And of course, the horror which plays out comes in the form of the Red Nun.

Remothered: Red Nun’s Legacy will dig deep into the story and present new special skills that expand the gameplay pillars of Remothered,” said Game Director Antonio Cutrona. “While the game is a standalone experience that fans of old-school horror can dive right into and enjoy without playing the first two games in the series, it will offer the conclusion that long-time fans have been waiting years to play.

Expanding the Pillars

Remothered: Ren Nun’s Legacy promises to deliver that old-school horror experience; one full of exploration, lots of interesting puzzles to solve, and of course, the opportunity to be hunted by some awful, horrific enemy. But the big new addition for Remothered fans is that you can now use melee combat. Of course, I think hiding and utilising stealth is the preferred way to deal with stalkers finding you, but sometimes you will have no choice but to engage in some action.

It very much looks like the kind of combat seen in the most recent Silent Hill f, where you are wielding a heavy blunt instrument to attack your foes. Whether you get more weapons or how they last in combat is hinted at, but we will have to wait and see. Apparently, fans were crying out for some form of combat in the game, and the developers are happy to showcase the results.

Survival Mechanics

But the heart of these games is surviving; much more of an emphasis than fighting and exploration. There are also puzzles galore to solve in these environments. Apart from the usual complexity and intrigue when trying to solve these, there are two things that interested me from the presentation. There was something called “Discovery Under Pressure,” which gave a sense of exploration and puzzle-solving in tense situations, rather than just having all the time in the world to solve things. There is always more danger breathing down your neck.

Then there is something called “Hypnosis Mode,” which gives you a second sight of the environment, allowing you to see things that normally wouldn’t be there in the real world. Hidden messages or secret passages can be revealed through this sight and we should be intrigued by how it comes together in-game.

A Visual Feast for the Trilogy Conclusion

After becoming a huge fan of Mafia: The Old Country last summer, and A Quiet Place a few years ago, from the small amount of gameplay and trailer shown, I think that Remothered: Red Nun’s Legacy could well have enough about it to follow in their footsteps. The developers are promising a “richly detailed world” for us to discover, so cross your fingers and hope that this will be a visual feast.

Stormind have also talked about the story being much more cinematic and deeply engaging, setting the standard for what fans will come to expect for the last game in this present trilogy. After that presentation, I feel very optimistic about what the makers were promising and the eagerness for the franchise itself.

The announcement trailer is very short, but accompanying that is a Developer Diary which is well worth a watch. Hopefully, we’ll get to see more as the summer showcases start in earnest. There is no release date for Remothered: Red Nun’s Legacy yet, but 2026 is very much in their sights.

You’ll find Remothered: Red Nun’s Legacy coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
