A Prequel To A Beloved RPG
GreedFall: The Dying World takes players back into the universe first introduced in the original GreedFall, telling a story set three years before the events of that game.
The adventure begins far from the familiar city of Sérène, on the mystical island of Teer Fradee. Having completed your initiation as a Doneigad, a spiritual leader of your people, your life is suddenly turned upside down when foreign powers from the Old Continent invade, capturing you and threatening your homeland.
Escaping captivity becomes the start of a journey across the vast continent of Gacane, a land plagued by war, political power struggles and a mysterious disease slowly ravaging the population.
Write Your Own Legend
Like its predecessor, GreedFall: The Dying World places heavy emphasis on player choice.
You’ll create and customise your character from the ground up, choosing attributes, talents and abilities before stepping into a story shaped by your decisions. Throughout the game, players can tackle situations through multiple approaches; diplomacy, stealth, persuasion or outright combat.
Alliances matter here. The factions you support and the deals you strike will have long-lasting consequences, influencing the political landscape and ultimately determining how the story unfolds.
Recruit And Shape Your Companions
Your journey through Gacane won’t be a solitary one.
Along the way, you’ll encounter eight companions, each with their own personalities, loyalties and backstories. Players can customise their equipment, abilities and combat roles while also building relationships that evolve as the story progresses.
Depending on your actions, these characters might become trusted allies, rivals or even romantic partners. But every decision carries weight, and pushing someone too far could cause them to walk away entirely.
Strategic Combat With Tactical Control
When diplomacy fails, GreedFall: The Dying World shifts into strategic real-time combat.
Players can pause the action using tactical pause, allowing them to plan attacks, coordinate companions and exploit enemy weaknesses before diving back into the battle. Alternatively, those who prefer a faster pace can rely on direct combat and reactive gameplay.
Multiple combat profiles allow players to tailor the experience, from full tactical control to a more action-focused style.
The Return Of A Rich RPG World
When the original GreedFall launched in 2019, it delivered a compelling RPG experience that earned praise for its narrative depth and world-building. In our review at the time we noted: “I have loved spending time in the world of Greedfall. The game narrative is complex, interesting and brilliantly layered… If you’re a fan of RPGs then grab some coffee, be ready to lose a lot of man-hours.”
The sequel – first revealed back in 2022 as GreedFall II – has taken a little longer to arrive than originally planned, but it now returns with an expanded story and a deeper exploration of the series’ fantasy world.
The Fate Of Two Worlds
With its mix of political intrigue, strategic combat and player-driven storytelling, GreedFall: The Dying World aims to build on the foundation laid by its predecessor.
The Deluxe Edition (£59.99) is available now on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC, with the Standard Edition (£49.99) releasing March 12th. Unfortunately, neither version is making the most of Game Pass at launch. Whether it drops onto the subscription service further down the line though is something we can only hope for.
The Deluxe Edition of GreedFall: The Dying World unlocks…
- Gacane Pioneers Pack, which includes two outfits for the main character and their companions, inspired by the factions of the Nauts and the Merchant Congregation.
- Peren’s Black Mass Pack, which includes an exclusive quest, an outfit and an alternative weapon.
- The Art Pack, which includes the 50-page digital artbook and iconic music from the game.
For fans of narrative RPGs where every choice matters, it may be time to return to the continent of Gacane and write a new legend. Stay tuned for our review.
