Final Zone – out now on PC and console

Prepare to enter the Final Zone once more!

The classic 1990s top-down mech shooter has been re-released for a whole new generation of soldiers (and nostalgic veterans). Published by the retro revival specialists at Ratalaika Games and featuring the original work of Edia Co, this blast from the past is available right now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation consoles, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Better yet, it comes in with the low price of ÂŁ5.99 – and there’s even a launch discount bringing it down to a mere ÂŁ4.79!

Step back into the “future of the 2000s,” an era where large-scale warfare is obsolete thanks to high-tech military satellites.

Instead, conflicts are settled by small-scale land warfare weapons, chief among them the New Age Powered-Suits, or “NAPs.” You are Howard Bowie, a soldier in the El Sharia Military Nation’s foreign legion, tasked with a mission that sounds suspiciously like a death sentence.

Classic Action, Modern Comforts

Final Zone on modern platforms aims to preserve the core action that made the original a cult favourite on home consoles like the SEGA Mega Drive (Genesis), while layering on a host of welcome quality-of-life features.

The original game saw you piloting your NAP through seven action-packed stages, battling swarms of enemies and powerful bosses with a wide variety of weapons that allowed for different attack strategies.

This re-release ensures that classic gameplay is more accessible and enjoyable than ever, thanks to:

  • Save State Function: Save your progress wherever you want in the game and restart from that exact point – a lifesaver for those tough 90s difficulty spikes!
  • Rewind/Turbo Function: Made a mistake? Rewind and try again! Want to speed through an easier section? Turbo has you covered. Perfect for achieving that flawless run or just breezing through.
  • Cheats Function: For those who want a more relaxed trip down memory lane (or just want to see the end!), you can activate cheats like infinite lives or invulnerability to make your mission significantly easier.
  • Gallery & Jukebox: Delve into the game’s history with a gallery viewing original illustrations, posters, and box designs. Plus, listen to any of the game’s classic music tracks anytime you want in the Jukebox.
  • Screen Filters: Customise how the game looks with several filter options, including a retro-style monitor effect or classic black-and-white.

Key Features

But what for the most key of key features? Well, in Final Zone on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC, they sit as follows…

  • Classic 90s Top-Down Mech Action: Pilot your NAP through 7 challenging stages against varied enemies and powerful bosses.
  • Modern Quality-of-Life Upgrades: Features save states, rewind, turbo, cheats, screen filters, a gallery, and a jukebox.
  • Wide Variety of Weapons: Experiment with different armaments to suit your combat strategy.
  • Retro-Futuristic Setting: Experience the “future of the 2000s” as envisioned in the 1990s.

Ready to Enter the Final Zone (Again)?

Whether you’re a veteran of 90s console wars or a newcomer curious about retro shooters, Final Zone offers a lovingly preserved piece of gaming history, enhanced with features that make it more approachable for today’s audience.

Jump into a NAP and fulfil Howard Bowie’s perilous mission – it’s available right now on the Xbox Store, Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Store and on PC for the launch price of just ÂŁ4.79. Good luck, soldier!

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
