Panzer Knights: Commander’s Edition is finally making the jump to consoles, bringing its unusual blend of arcade-style tank combat, tactical decision-making and anime-inspired storytelling to Xbox Series X|S, PC via Xbox Play Anywhere, and PlayStation 5.
Available now for ÂŁ20.99 from the Xbox Store, this enhanced release arrives packed with bonus content and a sizeable roster of iconic World War II armour.
It’s certainly a game that stands apart from the crowd. More Than Just Tank Battles
Set across some of World War II’s most significant campaigns, Panzer Knights puts you in command of a German panzer platoon as you battle through Europe, from the invasion of Poland to Operation Barbarossa and beyond.
Combat isn’t simply about charging forwards with the biggest gun. Every encounter asks players to think carefully about positioning, ammunition types and the vulnerabilities of enemy armour. Smoke screens, air support and platoon formations all play a role, rewarding tactical thinking rather than reckless aggression.
The Commander’s Edition also bundles in a collection of bonus vehicles, adding famous machines including the M4-748 Sherman, M26 Pershing, Churchill VII, Valentine XI, the enormous Panzer VIII Maus and the formidable Elefant tank destroyer.
Assemble The Right Crew
Outside the battlefield, Panzer Knights shifts its focus towards squad management.
You’ll recruit from a roster of 30 anime-styled crew members, each bringing their own skills and personal stories to discover. Levelling them up and experimenting with different crew combinations becomes just as important as expanding your collection of tanks, allowing you to tailor your platoon for different missions and challenges.
Alongside the main campaign, bonus missions and a customisable Skirmish Mode offer additional ways to earn rewards, unlock upgrades and put your favourite vehicles through their paces.
A Distinctive Spin On The Tank Genre
Tank combat games are hardly new, but few approach the subject quite like Panzer Knights. Its combination of accessible third-person action, RPG-style crew progression and anime presentation helps it carve out a unique identity.
That uniqueness was something we noted in our review, where we awarded Panzer Knights: Commander’s Edition a 3.5/5, saying: “While Panzer Knights: Commander’s Edition has its charms, it also manages to offset them with plenty of awkwardness. For players who love arcade-styled, tank-based combat, then Panzer Knights is probably worth checking out. Granted, it does make for a unique single-player experience, and there aren’t many story-driven arcade-style tank games on the market.“
If you’ve been searching for something a little different from traditional military games, this may be worth adding to your radar.
Panzer Knights: Commander’s Edition is available now on Xbox Series X|S, PC through Xbox Play Anywhere via the Xbox Store. It’s also on PlayStation 5 should you prefer. Expect to pay around ÂŁ20.99.
