Rune Axe – chopping away on Xbox and PC

The Evil King has already escaped. The hero has arrived too late. And somewhere beyond a mysterious portal, a villain is getting away with it. That means only one thing in Rune Axe – grab the axe and give chase.

Available now on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows PC, Rune Axe is a retro-inspired 2D action platformer from PowerSlash Studios, sending players on a monster-filled adventure across 30 handcrafted levels. And with three versions available through the Xbox Store, it comes in at just ÂŁ4.19.

The Hunt For The Evil King Begins

Rune Axe wastes little time setting up its adventure. After travelling a long way to defeat the Evil King, our hero discovers that his enemy has already disappeared through a strange portal. Without much hesitation, he follows.

What waits on the other side is a classic-style action platforming journey, one built around fast-paced combat, responsive movement and a powerful rune axe capable of dealing with the various monsters standing in the way.

There are 30 handcrafted levels to work through, each filled with enemies, collectables and hidden secrets. Coins and stars are waiting to be found, while magical potions can help players along the way as the challenge ramps up.

Rune Axe is clearly aiming for that old-school feel too. Vibrant pixel art accompanies an authentic retro-inspired soundtrack, while the straightforward premise keeps the focus on running, jumping, fighting and seeing what secrets might be tucked away off the beaten path.

Of course, no adventure involving an escaped Evil King would be complete without eventually catching up to him, with an epic final battle waiting at the end of the journey.

A Small Retro Adventure With A Big Axe

Give a hero an axe, put an Evil King somewhere in need of defeating and fill the space in between with monsters, secrets and plenty of platforming. That’s pure gaming goodness. And that’s the path Rune Axe is taking. For ÂŁ4.19, it offers a colourful retro-flavoured adventure for anyone looking to scratch that classic 2D action itch.

Rune Axe is available now from the Xbox Store, in three different editions for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows PC.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
