The new expansion for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is out now, sending Skif on another non-linear expedition packed with new locations, characters, weapons and choices that could dramatically alter his journey.

A New Chapter For Skif

Cost of Hope puts players back in control of Skif as events unfold alongside the story of Heart of Chornobyl. This time, however, a fragile peace between two of the Zone’s most recognisable factions is beginning to fall apart.

Duty sees the Zone as a threat that needs to be contained, while Freedom believes it represents something worth exploring and harnessing. With that uneasy relationship now breaking down, Skif is forced to navigate a web of competing interests where picking the “right” side may not be so straightforward.

As with the main game, decisions matter. The expansion’s non-linear structure means choices can influence not only how events conclude, but the journey itself, with a single playthrough unable to reveal everything Cost of Hope has to offer.

The Zone Gets Even More Dangerous

There are some particularly significant locations waiting for returning Stalkers.

The Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, previously sealed away from those daring enough to venture into the Zone, is now part of the journey. Players will also have to negotiate the maze-like Iron Forest, alongside previously unseen areas and new environmental threats.

And naturally, the Zone isn’t going to let you explore in peace. New mutated creatures, lethal anomalies and human enemies are waiting to make the journey considerably more difficult. Thankfully, Skif can also get his hands on new weapons and equipment to improve his chances of making it out alive.

Dozens Of Hours In The Zone

GSC Game World describes Cost of Hope as a massive expansion offering dozens of hours of gameplay, with plenty of room for exploration beyond the main objectives.

That should make this more than a brief return visit for existing players. Between its new regions, branching story and additional threats, there’s a substantial new expedition waiting for anyone prepared to step back into the Zone.

“Throughout the Cost of Hope development, we allowed ourselves to experiment more. To take risks. To surprise. Sometimes that meant trying things we’d never attempted before. Sometimes it meant making bold creative decisions simply because we believed they would make the experience more memorable. Above all, we wanted to create something that would genuinely excite long-time fans of the series. We can’t wait to hear what you think,” said Ievgen Grygorovych, Game Director and CEO of GSC Game World.

“For us, the release of this DLC is proof that even in the most difficult times, Ukrainians continue to create, work and deliver great games, and even the full-scale war has not been able to put the development of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. universe on hold. We have done everything we could to bring this story to the world, because the game gives us a unique opportunity to reach millions of people around the globe and tell them about Ukraine: its strength, talent, culture, identity and resilience,” said Max Krippa, Owner of GSC Game World.

A Strong Addition To An Already Immersive World

We awarded S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl 4/5 in our review, praising its atmosphere, exploration and audio design, while noting that technical issues held it back from reaching its full potential.

Cost of Hope certainly isn’t lacking ambition. It takes the elements that made the original adventure so compelling – exploration, survival, competing factions and difficult decisions – and builds another story around them.

The return of Duty and Freedom also gives the expansion an interesting conflict to explore, particularly when there is no obvious heroic choice waiting at the end of it.

How Much Will Hope Cost?

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope is available now for ÂŁ24.99 from the Xbox Store, with owners of the Ultimate Edition receiving access as part of that package. The expansion is available across Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5.

For those who have already spent dozens of hours getting lost in the Zone, this looks like a compelling reason to return. There are new places to discover, new dangers to survive and, perhaps most importantly, new choices to regret.

Because in the Zone, hope has always come with a price.
