It was way back in October 2019 when we first heard news that Failbetter Games would be taking their PC hit Sunless Skies: Sovereign Edition to Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch, with a planned early 2020 launch spoken of. Of course, much went on from there on out, wiping 2020 plans off the list of many. Now though it’s time to move ahead as we find the game rocking up in console-land.

Available to purchase and download right now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4 and Nintendo Switch, Sunless Skies: Sovereign Edition is a gothic RPG that will have you playing out the role of a spacefaring captain, safely aboard their steam loco. It is here where you’ll have to help your hapless crew head to the stars, keeping them out of trouble in the process.

It runs at a price of £18.99 from the Xbox Store, letting you sail the skies looking for success as the Victorian Empire looks to reach high. With more than 800,000 words bringing together a variety of stories and narratives that have been inspired by some of the greats, no less than four regions to fully explore, some real-time combat to take in, and plenty of upgrade and pets – yes, pets – to utilise, it’s great that we now find Sunless Skies present and correct on console.

It gets better still though, as this standalone tale once again sees us dropped into the Fallen London universe, one that was first discovered in Sunless Sea. Expect another beautiful world to take in.

Features include:

  • 800,000+ words of intertwining stories, inspired by CS Lewis, Jules Verne, HP Lovecraft and HG Wells
  • Four regions to explore: celestial wilderness, impossible industrial empire, pagan midnight expanse, and the domain of the dead
  • Real-time combat against horrifying celestial foes and merciless pirates
  • Upgrade your engine with bizarre equipment and powerful weaponry
  • Build a lineage of captains as each dies, or reload your most recent captain
  • Collect pets: the Useless Cat, Perfect Pangolin and more

We’ll be sure to get a full review of Sunless Skies: Sovereign Edition worked on and sent towards your eyes in the days and weeks ahead, but if you’re already sold on the premise and reckon a bit of light gothic reading is for you, get yourself over to your favoured digital store. The game is available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Nintendo Switch and, of course, PC through Steam.

Game Description:

THE SKIES ARE YOURS Captain a spacefaring steam locomotive, as a new Victorian empire takes to the stars! Lead your hapless crew into trouble – and out of their minds. Barter for barrels of time. Smuggle souls. Pause for cricket and a cup of tea.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
