Some nightmares are difficult to wake from. And you’ll find that Salvation: Echoes of War takes that idea rather literally, placing players inside the troubled mind of a wounded WWII bomber pilot as he attempts to make sense of a traumatic past.
This surreal third-person adventure has now arrived on Xbox Series X|S, inviting players into a strange purgatory where survival is about keeping your head down rather than charging into battle.
Available for ÂŁ16.74, Salvation: Echoes of War blends exploration, puzzles, stealth and non-aggressive combat into a story centred on trauma, redemption and the desperate search for a way back to consciousness.

A Battlefield Inside The Mind
The story begins with a bomber pilot barely surviving a devastating aerial attack during World War II. Gravely wounded and trapped in a coma, he finds himself somewhere between reality and nightmare. That place is purgatory, although it certainly isn’t the peaceful sort.
The pilot must revisit experiences inspired by wartime history, travelling through unsettling environments as he attempts to confront the memories and fears that have followed him into his unconscious state. What happened during the war and what exists inside his mind begin to blur together as the journey unfolds.
Salvation: Echoes of War isn’t about turning you – the player – into an unstoppable war machine. Instead, its approach to combat is deliberately restrained.
Enemies are sensitive to light and sound, meaning stealth and careful movement are often more useful than confrontation. The creatures stalking include regular enemies, tougher elites, lieutenants and generals, while stranger beings born from human suffering add an altogether more surreal threat to the journey.
Meet Your Most Important Ally
Thankfully, the pilot doesn’t have to navigate this nightmare completely alone.
A mysterious dog-like companion accompanies him throughout the adventure, helping with exploration, puzzles and stealth situations. More than simply another gameplay mechanic, the companion forms an important bond with the protagonist as the two make their way through purgatory.
Can You Escape Purgatory?
Salvation: Echoes of War takes the familiar setting of wartime conflict and pushes it somewhere considerably stranger. Its mixture of stealth, puzzles, exploration and surreal storytelling offers a different kind of adventure, one where confronting the past may prove more important than confronting the enemies.
Salvation: Echoes of War is available now on Xbox Series X|S for ÂŁ16.74 from the Xbox Store.
