Sam Barlow’s latest, Immortality, has you scanning old movies for clues

If you have played Her Story or Telling Lies, the first games from Immortality’s designer Sam Barlow, then you are halfway towards understanding what Immortality has to offer. Those games had you watching FMV sequences, with real-world actors delivering the plot in digestible chunks. That plot would have keywords, which you would note down on a piece of paper, before typing them into the in-game search engine, where more videos would appear for you to scour.

It led to some rather fantastic feelings, as your pool of keywords and videos grew increasingly large. The plot would develop – as would your understanding of it – and suddenly you had solved a murder mystery or uncovered a terrorist plot. Sam Barlow loves to deal with deceit and masks, as the stories the protagonists initially offer you are far from the ones you end with.

Following in similar footsteps is Immortality. It hovers, moth-like, around the career of failed actress (and complete fabrication) Marissa Marcel, who appeared in three movies over three decades. Your job is to watch snippets from those movies, and carefully isolate elements – visual, spoken or otherwise – that might lead you to more snippets.

Unlike Her Story and Telling Lies, Immortality is less focused on search engines, and more on something akin to Google Image Search. You are comparing images, like for like, to expand your library of film, which will in turn gain you more of these lost movies. The hope is, that by finding the lost reels of her movies, you can find out what happened to Marissa Marcel, and understand why her IMDB filmography is so sparse.

We can’t wait to dive into this mystery, as Sam Barlow hasn’t let us down yet. Even better, the whole kaboodle is on Game Pass for anyone who has subscribed to the service. Since his games are often short but intensely sweet, it makes the deal a brilliant one: give over a few hours, and you may well be in for one of 2022’s best experiences in any media. We will, of course, be letting you know our own views in an upcoming review.

Immortality is out now on Xbox Series X|S, PC and Game Pass for £16.74 from the Xbox Store.

Game Description:

Marissa Marcel would have been a star. She made three movies, but none of them were ever released. And Marissa Marcel disappeared. Explore three lost films: Ambrosio (1968) Minsky (1970) Two of Everything (1999) Match cut your own path through the footage and solve the mystery. What happened to Marissa Marcel? IMMORTALITY is the new interactive trilogy from Sam Barlow, creator of Her Story and Telling Lies.
