Schildmaid MX
Schildmaid MX – out now

Sometimes a shoot ’em up comes along that wants to do more than just fill the screen with danger.

Schildmaid MX, launching now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC, takes the classic side-scrolling SHMUP formula and injects a brilliantly chaotic twist – instead of simply dodging bullets, you’re encouraged to embrace them. Literally.

Absorb enemy fire, weaponise it, and fire it right back. It’s SHMUP energy with a deliciously reckless twist, and it makes for one seriously addictive loop.

Shield Up, Power Up, Blow Everything Up

Where traditional SHMUPs punish you for touching anything glowing, Schildmaid MX flips the rulebook. Your ship’s advanced shield tech allows you to absorb incoming fire and use that stored energy to power up devastating attacks. It’s risk versus reward in its purest form – stay bold, stay close, and grab as much danger as you can.

Lose the shield though, and things get spicy. Danger Time kicks in, forcing you to tighten your flight path, play smarter, and make every move count. It keeps the tension electric without ever slipping into frustration.

Three Ships, Three Playstyles

Schildmaid MX doesn’t lock you into a single approach. You’ll pick from three different ships, each built around a unique flavour of chaos.

Whether you prefer raw power, nimble dodging, or a steady balanced loadout, there’s a craft ready to match your rhythm. It’s the kind of variety that keeps repeat runs feeling fresh, especially when you’re chasing that next big leaderboard climb.

A Quick Recap Of The Essentials

If you just want the core facts, here’s your at-a-glance breakdown:

  • Intense 2D side-scrolling shoot ’em up action
  • Unique shield-based mechanic encourages absorbing enemy fire
  • Three selectable ships with distinct playstyles
  • Risk-versus-reward gameplay that constantly evolves mid-run
  • Online leaderboards for high-score hunters
  • Available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
  • Priced at ÂŁ16.74

One More Run? Always

It seems like there’s just something wonderfully moreish about Schildmaid MX. Maybe it’s the constant gamble of pushing your shield to its limits. Maybe it’s the thrill of grabbing a screen full of bullets to unleash a devastating counterattack. Or maybe it’s simply seeing your Gamertag creep higher and higher up those online leaderboards.

Whatever the reason, the loop is tight, fast, and dangerously replayable. Expect to tell yourself “just one more run” at least six times in a row. We’ll find out how that goes in full review soon.

Take To The Stars

If you’re after a SHMUP that feels familiar yet refreshingly bold, Schildmaid MX delivers the goods. It’s stylish, frantic, clever, and bursting with score-chasing potential.

And with the game now available across every major platform – Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, PC – there’s no excuse not to hop into the cockpit and start turning incoming fire into your own personal fireworks display.

Schildmaid MX is out now for £16.74. Ready to become humanity’s shield?

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore. Gamertag is neil363, feel free to add me to your list.
