2026's Best Games

Having been delisted in December 2014, it looked like there was no way back for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game. Purportedly removed because the licence between Oni Press and Ubisoft had expired, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was expected to enter the canon of great lost games, somewhere alongside PT and Goldeneye re-releases. But lo it is here, and we get to experience it’s charms all over again as Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game – Complete Edition releases on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Switch and PC.

It’s certainly in the running for longest title of 2021, and we’re barely out of the first couple of weeks. The important question, though, is whether it deserves the fuss? There’s a danger of over-hyping a tiny scrolling beat’em-up from Ubisoft Montreal.

In our opinion, the answer is more of a yes than no. As a belt-scroller, scrolling-beat’em-up, Double Dragon-clone – whatever you want to call it – it was huge fun, referencing video games left-right-and-centre (in much the same way as the comics did), and offering inventive bosses that were ripped straight from Bryan O’Malley’s imagination. Best of all, like Edgar Wright’s movie, it called on the chiptune auteurs Amananaguchi to soundtrack it all, and the result was the topmost of all drawers, musically.

That said, the brawling gameplay was slick but nothing to particularly write home about, and it wasn’t the longest, making it a bitesize treat. Depending on your expectations and your nostalgia for the original release, we would say that it’s at least worth a try. Of course, our full review of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game – Complete Edition on Xbox will be coming your way real soon.

That ‘Complete Edition’ at the end of the title means you get the Knives Chau and Wallace DLC, and the various Dodgeball minigames and character packs. Let us not forget that there was a neat co-op mode in here, as you could play as Ramona Flowers, Knives Chau, Stephen Stills and more. Everybody now: “we are Sex Bob-Omb, and we are here to make you think about death and get sad and stuff!”

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game – Complete Edition is out now on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S and starts at £11.99 from the Xbox Store. It’s also out on PS4, PS5, Switch and PC.
