Whilst there is a huge deal of love for the Dragon Ball franchise, it must be said that the release of The Breakers in 2022 turned out to be a bit of a damp squib. The idea was promising, but the execution, not so much. Here’s hoping then that the arrival of Season 2 of Dragon Ball: The Breakers enhances things considerably.

Dragon Ball: The Breakers released on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC back in October 2022, as Bandai Namco allowed players the chance to partake in an online asymmetrical action game in which they’d either be playing as one of a team of the most ordinary citizens, or as the all-powerful Raider – a classic Dragon Ball staple.

We loved the ideas found in Dragon Ball: The Breakers when we reviewed it on Xbox, but as our 2.5/5 review told, for all the opportunity to become that godly Raider and for the fun of the power summoning, poor matchmaking times (seriously, we sat there for tens of minutes at a time trying to get a game), disappointing combat and a tutorial that was worthless, brought things down.

But now Season 2 of Dragon Ball: The Breakers is here and with it comes Bandai, hoping to plaster over the cracks in order to deliver a game worthy of the franchise.

So what do we get with the arrival of Season 2? Well, expect a new Raider, a new map, additional transpheres and customisation possibilities. New Survivor Skins are also available and you can now play as Yajirobe, Chi-Chi and King Furry.

There’s a lot going on in Season 2 in fact and it also comes with a new Dragon Tier, with rewards found upon playing and unlocking ranks including with that King Furry skin. Get to play Vegeta, The Saiyan Prince, as the new Raider roaming the Temporal Seams of season 2!

Expect to find…

  • First Form: Saibaman – At the beginning of the match, you are playing a Saibaman. There are multiple of them around the map and you can switch control between them. If the Saibaman’s HP reaches 0 or if some time passes, even if the evolution energy is not maxed out, the Saibaman will evolve automatically. The third way to evolve is by grabbing a survivor and using the skill “self-destruct.”
  • Second form: Nappa – Nappa can increase its evolution energy by finishing off civilians and injuring Survivors. When Nappa fills up the evolution energy or if he is defeated by Survivors, Vegeta takes over as your next form.
  • Third form: Vegeta – Vegeta has two ways to transform into the Great Ape. The first is to create a Power Ball: this is an active skill of Vegeta’s that creates a makeshift full moon needed to transform into a Great Ape. The second way is to gather all seven Dragon Balls, then ask Shenron to “show you the full moon” which triggers the Great Ape transformation.

There’s more to those details though as both Nappa and Vegeta own a Scouter that highlights Survivors around them within a certain range. See, Nappa can plant a Saibaman in the ground that will ambush approaching Survivors, whilst Vegeta can use his skill “Call Nappa” to search for Survivors. This skill is available to Vegeta only if Nappa evolved without being defeated.

Further to that comes the new transpheres that are introduced in Season 2…

  • Goku (Super Saiyan)’s active skill: Instant Transmission. This skill allows you to concentrate and focus on where your allies are. You can then reach your allies instantly.
  • Gohan (Teen) (Super Saiyan)’s passive Skill: Ki control. This new skill reduces how long the Ki effect (blue aura) lasts when caught by the Raider while hiding.

Vegeta, Yajirobe and Chi-Chi are available in the in-game shop, as well as a “Raider and Survivor Skin Set” combining the three characters!

Besides those new characters, additional customisation items are added in the in-game shop. Finally, a new map, “Rocky Field”, is added as a free update.

You’ll find Season 2 of The Breakers rolling out right about now, whether that be on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch or PC. You’ll need the base game in place – of which the Xbox Store will sort you out there.

Let us know if you’ll be heading back into The Breakers. The comments are below.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
