A Selection of the Best Puzzle Games on Xbox One

Whilst FPS, RPGs and Sports games largely dominate the video gaming market, it’s not always about blowing someone’s head off or downing your buddy with a late touchdown in the latest version of Madden. Of course, there are perfectly good reasons as to why the above genres translate so well onto the next generation consoles, including the marrying of explosive processing speed with graphics which are so realistic that it’s easy to forget that you’re not watching television. Nevertheless, if you’re looking to broaden your horizons then there are a number of absorbing and intriguing puzzle games available for the Xbox One. After all, obliterating zombies and the like must get a bit tiring after a while. What? It doesn’t? Well, bear with us anyway!

Binaries

Binaries is essentially a more exciting take on the platform puzzle genre, which tests the reactions and reflexes and requires the user to take control of two different coloured balls. With 100 levels to navigate through of increasing difficulty, it may well be a good idea to have another controller on standby just in case you happen to lose one of your balls to the ether. Thankfully, the game also tries to crack a few jokes whilst you’re losing your mind and they’re the kind of jokes which are that corny, you’re bound to manage at least a grin. Promise. Okay, maybe not – but it’s entertaining at the very least.

Tricky Towers

We know what you’re thinking: “Uh, this one actually has the word tricky in the title, that doesn’t sound too good.” However, Tricky Towers is largely based on Tetris and we know that you’ll have put your fair share of hours into that game over the years. As we all know, Tetris has spawned a number of spinoffs since its original release in 1984, such as Hatris and various video slots including Betsafe’s Tetris Super Jackpots, where users must correctly position the iconic cuboid shapes correctly in order to win big. Tricky Towers, on the other hand, allows you all the luxuries of stacking blocks like classic Tetris but cleverly incorporates magic spells and multiple competitive gaming modes to add a little more flavour to the mix. Well worth a try.

The Witness

This latest effort from legendary game developer Jonathon Blow requires you to explore a picturesque island whilst solving complex but well-designed and innovative puzzles. The game is divided into 11 sections, with each section including a gold box, which must be discovered and activated in order to proceed to the next stage, all with the end goal of reaching a mountain situated within the middle of the island. With stunning visuals and a beautiful soundtrack to match, The Witness is a perfect example of how the high tech graphics of next-generation consoles can be put to good use within the puzzle solving genre. We certainly recommend playing this one on the biggest and best television you can find.

But wait… there’s more!

If you enjoy the aforementioned titles then please do remember that this is by no means an exhaustive list. There are hundreds of entertaining puzzle games currently on the market and we can think of worse ways to spend your time than a full-on foray into the puzzle-solving genre. Whilst most of these games take a fair bit of patience and a clear mind, they are among the most rewarding games out there so make sure to stick it out until the end. Or until you run out of controllers. Your call.
