Dorfromantik
Dorfromantik – out now on Xbox and PlayStation

Upon the realisation that Dorfromantik is an old German word for the ‘romanticisation of the village’, everything suddenly just makes sense.

The latest in an extensive range of cosy games currently on the market, Dorfromantik is a city-builder by Toukana Interactive and Headup; a game that rewards players who remember to take a step back, and take in the bigger picture.

Longing for the Countryside

Now available on Xbox and PlayStation, Dorfromantik has been indulging PC and Nintendo Switch players for a little while now, captivating audiences with the draw of crafting beautiful worlds.

There’s a reason that Steam gives you the opportunity to purchase both Dorfromantik and Unpacking together – they are some of the most relaxing games available to you right now.

The former has a bit more scope, however, asking you to place procedurally generated tiles within a game world, in order to craft the most picturesque village that money can buy.

You’ll receive forest tiles, water tiles, animal tiles and more, which must be strategically placed in order to maximise your points. Better placement of tiles with respect to the overall vibe of the village (place water tiles next to each other to form a lake, for example), and you’ll be rewarded with greater points totals.

Tend to the Land

Of course, you may require some guidance, and luckily the world you create in Dorfromantik will respond to your placements. Some tiles will ask you for a certain goal, for example the deer may wish to be placed within a forest of at least 50 trees.

Further still, in order for the train to chug around your creation, it’ll want to be placed next to multiple track tiles. This small element of puzzle-solving will keep your brain sufficiently switched on amongst the soothing soundtrack you’ll build to.

Dorfromantik Description

In Dorfromantik you start with a stack of procedurally generated tiles. One after the other, you draw the top tile of the stack, place it on one available slot and rotate for the best fit. Thereby groups and combinations of landscapes are formed, such as forests, villages or water bodies, and you are rewarded with points depending on how well the tile fits.

I'm an avid gamer who will play pretty much anything... but stick an open world or adventure game in front of me and I'm more than happy.
