Game Pass – culling games this week

Game Pass subscribers need to act fast!

This week is all about saying goodbye as a trio of high-quality titles are set to depart the service, covering fighting, narrative horror, and tactical deck-building.

As of December 15th, you have a final, urgent opportunity to dive back into the time-bending combat of Mortal Kombat 11, escape the terror of the North Sea in Still Wakes the Deep, and try to stave off the eternal winter in Wildfrost.

Departing today are the following three games from the Game Pass service, across PC and console…

Mortal Kombat 11 (Cloud, Console, and PC)

If brutal, bone-shattering combat is your passion, you need to revisit Mortal Kombat 11 immediately.

This acclaimed instalment in the franchise continues the epic saga with a time-bending narrative that pits Raiden against Kronika, the Keeper of Time, allowing players to control various past and present fighters.

It introduced the Custom Character Variations system, giving players unprecedented control over their fighter’s moveset and gear. Packed with content like the Towers of Time and a cinematic story mode, the game delivers on its reputation for gory intensity.

As we noted in our review of the Ultimate Edition, “Mortal Kombat 11 remains as bloody and gory as ever, and all that gore looks even more macabre in 4K.

Still Wakes the Deep (Cloud, Console, and PC)

Want to experience one of the most masterful narrative horror games of recent years?

Still Wakes the Deep comes from The Chinese Room. Set on a remote North Sea oil rig in the 1970s, you play as an ordinary oil worker fighting for survival against an unknowable, terrifying horror that has come aboard during a vicious storm.

There are no weapons, only your wits, as you must avoid, distract, and sneak past the relentless foe through flooding corridors and storm-lashed outer decks.

Our 4.5/5 review praised its tight, focused storytelling: “Still Wakes the Deep has some amazing visuals and a wonderful piece of sound design, especially in the voice work that is both haunting and full of warmth.

Wildfrost (Cloud, Console, and PC)

The battle against the eternal winter is drawing to a close!

Wildfrost is a hugely inventive and addictive tactical roguelike deck-builder. The world’s sun has frozen over, leaving the town of Snowdwell as the last bastion against the everlasting frost. Your mission is to build up a deck of card companions and items to battle waves of deceptively cute monsters and challenging boss foes, aiming to reach the Sun Temple.

Its unique, dynamic counter system forces players to plan moves far ahead, ensuring tactical depth. With immense replayability and dozens of cards to unlock, our 4.5/5 review of Wildfrost affirmed: “The biggest compliment I can give Wildfrost is that it gets better and better with every playthrough. Failure is actually a good thing as you unlock cards to try and invent new tactical approaches…

Urgent Game Pass Summary

  • Mortal Kombat 11: Iconic fighter, cinematic story, Custom Variations.
  • Still Wakes the Deep: First-person narrative horror, oil rig setting, acclaimed story.
  • Wildfrost: Tactical roguelike deck-builder, high replayability, dynamic counter system.

All three titles are leaving the Game Pass library on December 15th. If you need more time with these excellent games, remember you can purchase them at a discount of up to 20% to keep them in your library permanently. Just head over to the Xbox Store and you’ll be able to get hold of the download you need.

The second half of December is often quiet for new announcements, but the library is currently full of recent additions. However, your most pressing mission this week is clear: prioritise the three fantastic games that are departing the service before they are gone forever!
