The history of the Moomins is a fascinating tale. Created by Finnish artist Tove Jansson, these whimsical trolls, residing in their own unique community, first appeared in magazines. Jansson once described them as an antidote to the darkness of World War II and the Nazi threat to Finland.

The first Moomin story was published in 1945, and over the years, these endearing characters have captured the hearts of audiences worldwide. Now, with Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley, Xbox players can embark on a charming adventure in this beloved world, interacting with their favourite Moomin characters.

Ready for a heartwarming adventure?

This delightful family-friendly game is filled with heart and warmth, making it a perfect choice for the holiday season. Snufkin, a philosophical wanderer and close friend of Moomintroll, spends his summers in Moominvalley before venturing out to explore the world as winter approaches. The game opens with a charming montage depicting his travels, yet upon returning to the valley, Snufkin discovers that things have taken a turn for the worse, and Moomintroll has gone missing.

Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley weaves a compelling environmental message, portraying the encroachment of government and industry upon the natural beauty of Moominvalley and its impact on the valley’s inhabitants. You embark on a journey to restore balance, encountering a diverse cast of characters from the Moomin books, all as you go exploring the rich world Jansson created. As you may expect to hear, the writing is engaging, and the story is heartwarming and thought-provoking.

Gameplay involves completing missions and side quests throughout Moominvalley. These range from fetch quests, where you gather items to progress the narrative, to light platforming challenges that require navigation of the environment, utilising your surroundings. You’ll climb, jump, and even use objects like rocks to cross rivers. The gameplay variety keeps the experience fresh, never feeling stale, with chase sequences, stealth sections, and environmental puzzles adding to the diversity.

Glorious art

Snufkin also possesses a musical talent that aids him on his journey. You’ll collect various instruments, such as a harmonica and a flute, which can be used to charm creatures, move obstacles, and solve puzzles. However, some creatures and plants require a certain level of musical proficiency to influence, encouraging exploration and the collection of musical notes scattered throughout the world. It must be said however, that while the gameplay is generally enjoyable, adult gamers might find the lack of challenge a minor drawback.

The visuals are faithful to Jansson’s distinctive art style, with charming character designs and environments that capture the whimsical atmosphere of the Moomin world. The cutscenes are well executed, though the transitions between gameplay and cutscenes can be slightly jarring.

It all comes to life well though, and the soundtrack features music from the Icelandic band Sigur Rós, whose ethereal soundscapes perfectly complement the game’s atmosphere. The opening sequence’s use of their iconic track “Untitled 1 (Vaka)” is particularly noteworthy. As a whole, the sound design is well-rounded, and the lack of voice acting doesn’t detract from the experience.
