2026's Best Games

The keyart for Soulslinger Envoy of Death as it launches on Xbox and PlayStation

There’s something instantly compelling about the idea of a gunslinger fighting through the afterlife, and Soulslinger: Envoy of Death leans heavily into that concept.

Now available on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, this fast-paced roguelike FPS blends supernatural storytelling with relentless arena combat in a grim western-fantasy world.

Developed by Elder Games and published by Headup, Soulslinger: Envoy of Death arrives on console following its earlier PC release in 2025, bringing its high-intensity gunplay and progression-driven gameplay loop to a new audience.

A Gunslinger Trapped Between Life And Death

In Soulslinger: Envoy of Death, players step into Limbo as a powerful envoy tasked with battling The Cartel, a sinister organisation harvesting souls to escape the afterlife. It’s a premise that mixes dark fantasy, western mythology, and action-heavy combat into a world filled with danger and mystery.

The story unfolds across Haven, a strange hub filled with wandering spirits, uneasy allies, and enemies with their own motivations. Encounters with these characters can shape the direction of the journey, adding narrative weight to the otherwise frantic roguelike structure.

At its core, this is a tale of obsession, loss, and the desperate attempt to cheat death; themes that run alongside the explosive gameplay.

Roguelike Gunplay In A Western-Fantasy World

Gameplay in Soulslinger: Envoy of Death revolves around short, intense combat runs through procedurally arranged arenas. Waves of cultists, monsters, and elite enemies swarm the player, testing reflexes, weapon choice, and upgrade strategies.

The FPS mechanics feel deliberately arcade-leaning, encouraging aggressive movement and quick decision-making as enemies close in from every direction.

Each defeat feeds progression, allowing players to gather soul essence and unlock permanent upgrades that make future attempts more survivable.

Crafting Power In The Afterlife

Between runs, players return to Haven to prepare for the next descent into battle. Weapons can be crafted and abilities enhanced, gradually transforming the protagonist into the ultimate Soulslinger.

This progression system sits at the heart of the experience, ensuring that even failed attempts feel like forward momentum. New upgrades, abilities, and gear combinations open up fresh approaches to combat, encouraging experimentation across multiple runs.

The roguelike structure also means the story adapts to player choices and outcomes, subtly evolving as the battle against The Cartel continues.

A Console Arrival After Early PC Success

Soulslinger: Envoy of Death first appeared on PC following an Early Access period, launching fully in 2025. While the game currently holds mixed player feedback on Steam, its console release offers a chance for the supernatural shooter to find a broader audience.

With its blend of roguelite progression, western-inspired world-building, and fast FPS combat, Soulslinger: Envoy of Death aims to deliver a distinctive twist on the genre.

If you’ve ever wondered what a gothic Wild West gunfight in Limbo might feel like, this might be your chance to find out. The Xbox Store awaits with a download costing ÂŁ16.99 – it’s just a shame Soulslinger isn’t making the most of Game Pass at launch.
