If you enjoyed the launch of Formula Retro Racing back in 2020, there’s a good chance you’re going to be excited by the release of the next game in the franchise – Formula Retro Racing: World Tour.

Available right now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC, Formula Retro Racing: World Tour is something we’ve been keeping a little eye on ever since we first got behind the wheel for a preview at the back end of 2022. From there attempts at a Kickstarter campaign played out, all prior to today’s release taking hold.

Formula Retro Racing: World Tour is priced at £16.99 from the Xbox Store, playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. You should find it on Switch and PC for roughly that price too. Drop in and you’ll be smacked around the chops by a proper old-school experience, ass retro-style arcade racing takes hold, hammering home memories of games from years gone by.

It works the low-poly visual style that was successful in the original game, complete with a retro soundtrack, the fastest, smoothest of action – you’re looking at 4K and 60fps performance – and more.

Whether you’re looking to race alone or go up against the toughest of opponents in 4-player split-screen, Formula Retro Racing: World Tour should be capable of delivering the retro arcade hit you need in your life. Unless that is you’re looking to play on PlayStation – that version has been delayed a little until April 21st. Wherever you play, expect to be treated to four game modes – Arcade, Grand Prix, Eliminator and Free Practice.

Further to that are a couple of car classes with various different cars included – both single seater racers and all-powerful muscle cars. The track list is pretty damn decent too, consisting of a host of circuits with landmarks that you’ll recognise…

Andrew Jeffreys, Repixel8 Director said: “It’s been great working with CGA Studios on Formula Retro Racing: World Tour, with the aim to create the ultimate retro racing experience.  We’re super excited about the upcoming launch and getting the game into the hands of players, but we’re not stopping there.  We’ve got plenty more in the pipeline for content, gameplay, supported platforms and hardware.”

Jon Wetherall MD, CGA Studio Games Director  said: “We are super excited to work with Repixel8 to help Andrew realise his creative vision of the ultimate retro racer. It is exciting to create new tracks and experiences while staying in the classic racer style. We have enjoyed particularly squeezing every last drop of performance from the older consoles to get the 60fps gameplay we want from an arcade racer.”

The Xbox Store will sort you out with a download of Formula Retro Racing: World Tour on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. You’ll also find it on Nintendo Switch, PC and via VR. We’re in the process of running a full Xbox review, but would love to see how this fares in VR too!

Will you be getting behind the wheel of Formula Retro Racing: World Tour? The comments are below.

Game Description:

Formula Retro Racing: World tour is the second in the Formula Retro Racing series, retro-style arcade racing games influenced by the classic arcade racing games of the early 90s. Featuring fast and exciting gameplay, crisp low poly visuals, a retro soundtrack and high-speed action. ABOUT A retro racer updated for the modern age, Formula Retro Racing: World Tour fuses the pick-up-and-play simplicity of 90s-style arcade racing with realistic physics and split-screen multiplayer. Building on the success of the original retro racing hit, Formula Retro Racing: World Tour introduces new tracks and car types for an additional level of depth. You’ll race through iconic global locations, compete against other drivers, and try to beat your lap times. Do you have what it takes to master each racing line, hug every apex, and cross the chequered flag to victory?

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
