Starfield – PS5 play and updates galore

It’s taken a while, but Starfield has finally made the jump. As of today, April 7th, Bethesda’s sprawling sci-fi RPG is officially available on PlayStation 5, arriving alongside its biggest update yet and a brand-new story expansion.

For a game that was already vast at launch, this moment feels less like a simple port and more like a relaunch – one that opens the Settled Systems to an entirely new audience while giving returning players plenty of reasons to dive back in.

And with Free Lanes and Terran Armada landing at the same time, this is arguably the most complete version of Starfield we’ve seen so far.

A New Frontier For PlayStation Players

Since its debut in 2023 on Xbox and PC, Starfield has continued to evolve, but its arrival on PlayStation 5 marks one of the biggest milestones yet.

The PS5 version (grab it from the PlayStation Store today) doesn’t just bring the base game across. It also takes advantage of the hardware, incorporating features like adaptive triggers, the DualSense lightbar, and touchpad functionality. Those on PlayStation 5 Pro can also choose between performance and visual modes, offering flexibility depending on how you want to explore the galaxy.

For new players, it’s a chance to step into one of Bethesda Game Studios’ most ambitious creations to date – a universe built around freedom, exploration, and storytelling on a massive scale.

Free Lanes Changes How You Travel The Stars

Leading the charge in this latest update is Free Lanes, a free addition available to all players across Xbox Series X|S, PC, and now PlayStation 5.

The standout feature is the introduction of interplanetary travel within systems, allowing players to cruise seamlessly between planets rather than relying solely on fast travel. It’s a change that subtly reshapes the feel of exploration, making space travel more immersive and giving players more time to engage with their crew and ship.

But that’s just the beginning. The update also expands the world with new locations, encounters, and dungeons, while introducing fresh systems like X-Tech upgrades, enhanced enemy modifiers, and improvements to outposts.

There’s even a new land vehicle – the Moon Jumper – alongside additional crew members and deeper progression options for those venturing into New Game Plus.

Terran Armada Brings A New Story To The Settled Systems

Alongside the free update comes Terran Armada, a paid story expansion that introduces a brand-new questline focused on a rising robotic threat across the Settled Systems.

This DLC adds new characters, locations, enemies, and rewards, placing players at the centre of a conflict that could shape the future of humanity in space. It’s a more narrative-driven addition, giving players a fresh reason to return – or an extra layer of depth for those just starting out.

For Premium Edition owners on Xbox and PC, this content arrives at no extra cost, while PlayStation players can jump in from day one.

A Living Universe That Keeps Growing

Starfield has never stood still. Since launch, Bethesda has continued to expand the experience with new systems, quality-of-life improvements, and a growing catalogue of community Creations.

This latest update also builds on the Trackers Alliance, adding new bounty hunting missions, contracts, and rewards. It’s another step towards making the Settled Systems feel more reactive and alive, offering different ways to engage with the world beyond the main story.

The Most Complete Version Yet?

When we reviewed Starfield back in 2023, awarding it a 4.5/5 score, we called it:

the next evolution for a Bethesda game… a sandbox that runs almost perfectly… allowing you to forge your own path in an unfathomably large world.

That foundation hasn’t changed. But with the addition of new systems, deeper exploration, and now a PlayStation launch, Starfield feels more fully realised than ever.

A Galaxy Worth Returning To?

The arrival of Starfield on PlayStation 5 isn’t just about bringing the game to a new platform. It’s about marking a moment where everything comes together – base game, updates, expansions, and years of refinement.

For newcomers, it’s the perfect time to step into the stars. For veterans, it’s another reason to chart a new course. Because in Starfield, there’s always another system waiting just beyond the horizon.

Starfield is also available on Xbox Series X|S, PC, Play Anywhere and through your Game Pass subscription.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
