Nocturnal Whispers
Nocturnal Whispers – out now on Xbox

A new and gripping journey of psychological drama that puts you in the shoes of a psychoanalyst has just opened its office on the Xbox Store, but it arrives with a history.

Nocturnal Whispers, the latest full-motion video (FMV) experience from FMV Interactive, has launched today. This unique new title is now available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S for £12.49.

With an intriguing premise and a unique “question construction” mechanic, Nocturnal Whispers has a lot of potential on paper. But from a developer with a less-than-stellar track record, the big question is: can it deliver?

A Developer With a Lot to Prove

Let’s be frank, our history with FMV Interactive’s games has been a rocky one. When we reviewed their previous title, the casino-themed mystery Vegas Tales, we gave it a 2/5 score, concluding that it was “blandly presented, utterly unbelievable and can’t decide whether it’s a deadly serious take on a sleuthing game or just an outright comedy.

It was a similar story with their other recent title. In our 2/5 review of Truth, we stated that while we are in a “second golden age of FMV adventures,” Truth was “most definitely… a substandard alternative.

With this history in mind, Nocturnal Whispers has a very high bar to clear to win us over.

A Recurring Nightmare

The story of Nocturnal Whispers begins as a woman, plagued by a series of terrifying and recurring nightmares, seeks your professional help. It is up to you to begin the session, guide the narrative, and solve the mystery behind her dreams.

This is a deeply realistic narrative experience, brought to life by Hollywood veterans through high-quality, live-action video. You will watch as each emotion and every new revelation unfolds in front of you, putting you right at the heart of the story.

The potential saving grace of the gameplay is its unique and interactive storytelling. Your questions will guide the narrative, but you won’t just be picking from a list. You must craft your own questions by combining the topics the patient mentions, allowing for a truly personalized and engaging therapeutic journey. You’ll need to piece together the clues from her responses and use your psychoanalytical skills to interpret the symbolism in her dreams.

Your Psychoanalyst’s Notes

Here’s what you can expect from this new psychological drama:

  • An Immersive Full-Motion Video Experience: A deeply realistic narrative brought to life by Hollywood veterans.
  • Unique “Question Construction” Gameplay: Craft your own questions by combining topics the patient mentions.
  • A Gripping Psychological Story: Delve into a patient’s subconscious and uncover the hidden truths behind her nightmares.

The session is about to begin, and a new mystery is waiting to be unravelled.

If you’re a fan of FMV games and are curious to see if FMV Interactive have finally delivered on their potential, Nocturnal Whispers is ready for your analysis on the Xbox Store right now.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore. Gamertag is neil363, feel free to add me to your list.

As much as I loved the first wave of FMV (Phantasmagoria, GK the Beast Within), this one is not cutting it for me. It just looks like a movie with vague branching choices.
Bring us something really creepy like the first wave of FMV that offers more than just multiple choice dialogs!
