Priced at ÂŁ29.24 for those purchasing outright, this is a fresh take on the iconic fighting franchise as BlazBlue swaps arena battles for fast-paced roguelite action.

And honestly? That Game Pass launch makes this one incredibly easy to recommend trying.

A New Genre For BlazBlue

Instead of traditional one-on-one fighting, BlazBlue Entropy Effect X leans into 2D roguelite action, blending stylish combat with repeatable runs and evolving character abilities.

You’ll command a roster of characters inspired by the BlazBlue franchise, each bringing unique combat styles and skills into fast, responsive battles. Precision movement, rapid attacks, and experimentation with builds sit at the heart of the experience, creating a gameplay loop built around improvement and discovery.

It’s a big shift for the series. But it should still be one that carries the unmistakable anime-inspired visual flair and energy fans expect. Stay tuned for our full review – it’s coming soon and we’ll let you know how this one plays.

Diving Into The Sea Of Possibility

The story unfolds inside a mysterious research facility known as the Lab, where scientists are desperately trying to prevent the collapse of the world. Their final hope lies in collecting Shards of Possibility, hidden within a strange dimension known as the Sea of Possibility.

Only one individual – Ace – can dive into this unstable realm.

Each descent brings new memories, new dangers, and new revelations about the world’s fate. As Ace continues the mission, reality begins to blur, and the truth behind the research slowly emerges.

It’s a narrative setup that fits surprisingly well with the roguelite structure, where repeated runs feel like part of the story rather than separate from it.

Day One Game Pass Energy

For many, the biggest headline here is the Game Pass launch.

With BlazBlue Entropy Effect X available on Game Pass from day one, there’s almost no barrier to jumping in and seeing how this roguelite spin on the franchise feels. Combined with Play Anywhere support, players can seamlessly move between Xbox and PC while keeping their progress intact.

It’s exactly the kind of release that Game Pass excels at; something slightly different, stylish, and easy to experiment with.

A Series With Strong Roots

The BlazBlue name already carries plenty of weight with Xbox players. We saw just how strong the franchise could be with our 4.5/5 review of BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle Special Edition, where we said: “BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle Special Edition is a welcome return home for the BlazBlue series on Xbox… an accessible, fun and deep fighter.”

And long-time fans will remember entries like BlazBlue: Continuum Shift, which helped define anime fighting games in the early 2010s.

Now, BlazBlue Entropy Effect X takes that legacy somewhere new, without abandoning the style and identity that made the series stand out in the first place.

A Stylish New Direction

Spinoffs can be risky, but roguelite action feels like a natural playground for BlazBlue’s dramatic combat and character-driven storytelling.

With Game Pass availability, striking 2D visuals, and fast combat at its core, BlazBlue Entropy Effect X is shaping up to be one of the more interesting genre crossovers the series has attempted.

If nothing else, it’s well worth a download.

BlazBlue Entropy Effect X is available now on Xbox Series X|S and PC via the Xbox Store. There’s Game Pass and Play Anywhere support built-in.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
