It may have been rolling in PC Early Access since 2018, but Super Animal Royale only really popped up onto our radar when it hit Xbox Game Preview earlier in 2021. Now though that same game has broken out of the shackles of that early access form to release for real, into the wide open world, on all manner of formats.
It goes without saying that Super Animal Royale finds a place on the PC (Steam) and Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S stores, but now it also drops onto Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PS5, with a Google Stadia offering arriving soon too.
Super Animal Royale is an altogether different take on the usual Battle Royale scene, placing you into the role of numerous animals, all armed to the teeth and ready for a fight. It’s a free-to-player which is good, but that doesn’t mean you can’t open the wallet if you don’t wish to. In fact, taking the Xbox Store page alone, there are numerous options out there for those looking to go deep into the Super Animal Royale battle.
The free download should be your best bet, but from there is the £11.98 Super Edition which throws in a ton of exclusive perks and DLC cosmetics for good measure. There’s also the much cheaper Starter Pack for £3.98 and this is the best way to get access to the Season 1 gameplay with more cosmetics, S.A.W. tickets and more. It’s Season 1 which adds in Super Frogs (why not!) and a ton of fresh new content to the game. With more than 300 breeds on the table, 600 odd cosmetic items available and a mass 64-player fight to the death, it’s not like Super Animal Royale was lacking in content, but Season 1 just adds a little more.
Further are additional S.A.W. Ticket packs with 5000 SAW points provided for £31.99, 2800 for £19.99 and 1000 for £7.99.
The question is, should you be playing the game? Well, we’ve been hands-on with Super Animal Royale throughout the Xbox Game Preview process and were very taken by what we found. Yes there are some rough edges, and yes this is still Battle Royale – and your love or hate for that will ultimately dictate – but we’ll be sure to drop some full review thoughts now that those Preview shackles have been broken.
In the meantime, let us know what you think of Super Animal Royale. Is it a fun new take on a genre that grinds on regardless?
