Tale of Dark Lands – playing out on console

You don’t always need a sprawling 100-hour RPG packed with endless side quests and complicated systems. At times, a sword, a few goblins, and a delicate fantasy world will do. That’s where Tale of Dark Lands comes in.

Available now on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, this low-poly action RPG combines classic fantasy storytelling with character progression, crafting systems and a healthy dose of monster slaying. And it does it all for a wallet-friendly ÂŁ8.39.

  • Genre: Action RPG

A Small Village, A Big Problem

The story begins in familiar fantasy fashion. You take control of a mercenary hired by a struggling village to deal with persistent goblin attacks. A straightforward job? You’d think so, but as with all things gaming, this quickly escalates as a much darker threat begins to emerge from the shadows.

Before long, what started as a simple contract pulls your hero into an ancient mystery that could spell disaster for the entire region.

Build Your Own Hero

In Tale of Dark Lands you’re given the freedom to shape your character, however you see fit. A dedicated creator allows you to customise your hero’s appearance before setting out, while experience points, skills and equipment upgrades ensure that your warrior becomes stronger as the adventure progresses.

Gear also plays a major role. New weapons, armour pieces, helmets and magical items can be discovered, purchased or crafted throughout the journey, giving players plenty of opportunities to refine their build.

And then, beyond combat, Tale of Dark Lands includes several systems designed to add a little extra depth to the experience. Resources gathered during your travels can be taken to the village blacksmith to forge new equipment, while runes can be used to improve existing gear through the Runic Forge. Trading also forms a significant part of the adventure, allowing players to buy valuable items and sell off unwanted loot gathered during their travels.

Hell, there’s even a grid-based inventory system, bringing a touch of classic RPG management to proceedings as you decide what stays and what gets left behind.

Ready To Enter The Dark Lands?

Tale of Dark Lands is available right now on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch for ÂŁ8.39. If you’re Xbox minded, you’ll have the choice between an Xbox Series X|S optimised version, or that which works nicely with Xbox One.

If you’re in the mood for a fantasy adventure that focuses on straightforward questing, character progression and monster hunting without demanding dozens upon dozens of hours, this could be a journey worth taking.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
