2026's Best Games

Stories are all around us. They don’t have to be epic sagas filled with dragons or heroes on quests for redemption. They can be small, personal tales about everyday life, love, or tragedy.

It’s family gatherings which are often breeding grounds for such stories, where older generations share memories and experiences spanning decades. Tell Me Your Story is a puzzle game that beautifully captures this spirit, focusing on a young woman who listens to her grandmother’s tales of adventure.

Tell Me Your Story Review 1
Can you help Amelia and Rose?

You play as Amelia, who is helping her grandmother, Rose, move into a new home. As they unpack, Amelia discovers mementos from Rose’s youth, sparking memories of her travels to exotic locations like the Amazon rainforest, Paris, and China. Together, they piece together these stories, reliving Rose’s extraordinary life.

It’s a charming and simple story, conveyed with minimal text and relying primarily on visuals and comic book-style panels. While deciphering the narrative sometimes requires careful observation, the presentation is engaging and makes this a perfect game to enjoy with family and children.

Initially, the gameplay can be a bit unclear. I was initially presented with a visual of a house, cluttered with boxes and items from the move, unsure of what to do next. There are no explicit instructions or tutorials. Instead, you have a to-do list and a hint button with three uses. Eventually, I figured out that I had to drag and organise items into categories, such as grouping plant pots or stacking boxes. Once completed, I progressed to the next puzzle and story segment.

What should you do here?

After grasping the core mechanic, the gameplay clicked into place. It feels designed for touchscreen devices, as you drag items across the screen, stack them, or remove them to reveal puzzle solutions. However, the puzzles are diverse, ranging from matching leaves to deciphering symbolic sequences that represent Rose’s journeys. Some of these puzzles can be quite challenging, but I found them enjoyable and rewarding.

However, the touchscreen-oriented mechanics don’t translate seamlessly to a traditional controller, which affects play on Xbox. And some puzzles could definitely benefit from clearer explanations beyond the limited hints.

Tell me Your Story’s visuals are lovely, inviting, full of colour and running a cosy aesthetic. Combined with the hand-drawn environments, characters, and objects, it all creates a delightful world. The way the game mechanics are integrated into the visuals is clever, whilst the sound design is simple but effective, complementing the visuals and gameplay.

An imaginative world

Despite minor control and tutorial issues, Tell Me Your Story is an excellent puzzle game. The imaginative world and puzzles create a lovely experience, no matter whether you’re organising household items or searching for hidden animals in the Amazon rainforest; each task feels pretty unique.

While some puzzles could well require a bit of head-scratching or online assistance, you should gather your family and share in the joy of uncovering the tales of Tell Me Your Story together.

I am an actor and a writer. I act quite a bit on stage, a little bit on tv and never on tuesdays. I have had some of my writing published and have written for TV and stage. I have been playing games since they begun and don't seem to be getting any better.
