Like many games built around Backrooms lore, The Backrooms: Forsaken drops players into an impossible maze of seemingly endless rooms where escape is anything but guaranteed.
Rather than relying purely on atmosphere, however, this entry introduces a companion, alongside a more structured story, giving players something to focus on as they navigate the unsettling environment. Along the way you’ll solve environmental puzzles, explore twisting corridors and deal with the unnerving moments that horror fans will be expecting.
A Familiar Genre With Plenty Of Competition
The Backrooms has become one of horror gaming’s busiest subgenres, with Xbox already home to more than a few interpretations.
When we reviewed Escape the Backrooms, we said it “strikes a great blend between eerie aesthetics and clever puzzles” before noting that “the aimless exploration… leaves Escape the Backrooms a divisive entry in an overstuffed genre.”
Meanwhile, Backrooms Level X impressed us a little more, earning a 3.5/5 score thanks to its effective scares and concise running time. We concluded that “if you are looking for a little scare inside a mind-bending maze, then Backrooms Level X might just be the perfect fright night for you.“
The Backrooms: Forsaken now steps into that same space, attempting to separate itself by putting greater emphasis on story rather than simply wandering through procedurally unsettling corridors.
