Many years ago – and we mean MANY years ago – we spent what seems like a million hours playing North & South on our old Commodore Amiga. It was one of the defining games of the late 1980s and set us in good stead for the plethora of strategic action titles to roll out in future years. Now though North & South is back, with a remastered, reimagined version in The Bluecoats: North & South on Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Let’s get one thing sorted before we go on, if what Microids and Appeal Studios are providing here with release of The Bluecoats: North & South on Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC is able to relive the glory of the fight found in the original North & South, we will be very happy indeed.

Available to purchase and download this second, this remastered version of the late ’80s classic comes to modern day consoles and PC in the hope of providing further gaming memories to fans of the original game. But it should also be able to cover the bases required of a more modern day gamer too – ie, not one so long in the tooth as us – and so if you’re in the market for a new tactical affair, one that will have you conquering territories and attempting to take control of various states, this is it.

Priced at £24.99, North & South will see you leading your forces from Europe into whole new worlds as you discover the history of the American Civil War. With the option to pick your starting year, The Bluecoats could well allow you to change history as we know it.

A variety of game modes are in place with The Bluecoats: North & South, letting you get your turn-based strategy fix, get acquainted with real-time battles, AND partake in some good old FPS mode. Throw in a full two-player mode – an essential for North & South – and the basics are most certainly there.

Features include:

  • – Turn-based strategy map: take charge of operations and move your battalions to capture new states, engage the enemy, or strengthen your positions.
  • – Real-time battles: get to the heart of the action and directly confront the enemy. Use your infantry, cavalry and artillery to achieve victory. Use the strengths of each corps to crush your opponent.
  • – Attack and defend forts and trains in FPS mode. The totally redesigned gameplay puts you in the shoes of the soldier. Defend your positions from the invader or take the initiative by attacking enemy possessions.
