Psyvariar 3- coming in 2026

The ultimate risk-versus-reward shoot ’em up is powering up for a modern comeback with Psyvariar 3.

Red Art Games has officially announced Psyvariar 3, the highly anticipated sequel in the legendary vertical shmup series, set to celebrate the franchise’s 25th anniversary.

Developed by the Sophstar creators at Banana Bytes, the game is set to bring its signature buzz mechanic to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch platforms, and PC on March 19th, 2026.

This new entry is not just a revival; it’s a full-blown evolution, designed by lovers of the genre with deep reverence for the original. It promises to build on the franchise’s intense, high-stakes action while introducing new characters, refined controls, and a wealth of new game modes.

The Buzz is Back

For those new to the series, Psyvariar isn’t like other shmups. The franchise, which began in Japanese arcades in 2000, is built around a unique and thrilling buzz mechanic. This system rewards players for skillully grazing enemy bullets, powering up their ship and racking up huge score multipliers. It’s a high-risk, high-reward system that turns every screen of bullets into a strategic dance.

Psyvariar 3 is being developed by a team that understands this core appeal. Banana Bytes, the makers of the critically acclaimed SHMUP Sophstar, are collaborating with Red Art Studios to deliver an experience that is both faithful to its arcade roots and accessible for modern players.

A New Generation of Psyvariars

The story of Psyvariar 3 takes place decades after the fall of ETA in the previous game. The Earth colony has thrived, but a new, unknown alien signal has been detected. The skies darken once more, and a new generation of pilots must rise to save humanity.

This new chapter introduces seven playable characters, each with their own unique shot types, buzz & bomb mechanics, and scoring systems, ensuring massive replay value.

In a fantastic crossover, the beloved magical girl Cotton from the Cotton series is fully playable as a guest character, complete with her own ship and abilities!

More Modes Than Ever Before

This is a comprehensive package designed for endless replayability. The game will launch with a huge variety of modes:

  • Arcade Mode
  • Arrange Mode
  • Mission Mode (featuring 49 short challenges)
  • Caravan Mode (score attack)
  • Endless Mode
  • Practice Mode

The game features a refined buzz system, a “neo-retro 3D aesthetic” inspired by the original titles, and a new Neutrino & Shield system. The controls have also been updated, with the signature “Roll” mechanic now optimied for modern controllers, while still preserving the original arcade wiggle input for veterans seeking an extra edge.

Physical Editions for Collectors

For those who love a physical copy, Psyvariar 3 is also getting a boxed release on PlayStation 5. While a Standard Edition will be available at multiple retailers, a limited Deluxe Edition will be available exclusively from the Red Art Games online store. This 500-copy limited run includes:

  • A copy of the game
  • An exclusive sleeve with alternate cover art
  • A magnet set

The high-risk, high-reward action of a true arcade legend is returning, and it’s in the hands of a passionate and proven developer.

With a guest appearance from another genre icon and a huge variety of modes, Psyvariar 3 is set to be a must-play for SHMUP fans.

Get ready to graze your way to a high score when it launches on March 19th, 2026. We’ll be sure to remind you as that date arrives.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
