Voidwrought – coming to Xbox and PlayStation

The Red Star is rising, and a new, unknowable power is stirring from its cocoon.

Publisher Kwalee (previously behind the likes of The Precinct) and Swedish independent developer PowerSnake have officially announced that their 2D cosmic horror action-platformer, Voidwrought, is set to release on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.

This exciting news confirms that console players will get to delve into the thawing ruins of the First Civilisation and strike down the primaeval gods that dwell there. On top of the digital release, physical editions for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch have also been confirmed.

A New Cosmic Horror Descends

Voidwrought is a fast-paced action-platformer that plunges you into a dark and mysterious world. The coming of the Red Star heralds a new age, and emerging from its cocoon, you take on the role of the “Simulacrum.”

Your purpose is singular and driven: you must collect Ichor, the very blood of the gods, from the monstrosities who hoard it.

The game features dramatically-realised, hand-drawn locations, from the star-scorched Surface to the biomechanical ruins of the Abandoned Expedition.

This grim world is brought to life by a rich, foreboding score from the acclaimed composer Jouni Valjakka, known for his work on Anima: Song of the Abyss and Vigil: The Longest Night.

Delve, Fight, and Customise

With its sharp controls, engaging exploration, and deep lore to discover, Voidwrought should well be a dynamic new addition to the modern Metroidvania genre.

You will descend below the star-scorched surface and explore the multidimensional depths below, from the corrupted revelry of the Court to the icy tunnels of the Old Waters. The experience is built on smooth, satisfying movement and tight controls.

The world is filled with treasures that grant unique powers. You will discover and equip over 30 active Relics and passive Souls to customise your playstyle. These range from powerful spectral weapons to a host of passive buffs, allowing you to tailor your build to any challenge.

However, the ruins of the First Civilisation are not empty. The world is inhabited by over 70 different enemies and 10 formidable, god-like bosses that you must strike down to harvest their precious Ichor.

A key feature of the game is the ability to build and expand your own shrine. Starting from a tiny cult, you will excavate further into the ruins of the Gray City, expanding your influence and gaining followers. As your shrine grows, new secrets, powerful rewards, and even new horrors will come to light.

Physical Editions for Collectors

For fans of physical media, publisher Selecta Play is creating two beautiful boxed editions for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. Alongside the boxed Standard Edition, a stunning Collector’s Edition will be available, which includes:

  • The full boxed copy of Voidwrought
  • A CD soundtrack
  • 3 character magnets
  • 1 embroidered patch
  • 1 metallic pin

A new and terrifying journey into the depths of a fallen world is on the horizon. With its beautiful hand-drawn art, fast-paced combat, and deep customisation, Voidwrought has all the hallmarks of being a must-watch, especially suited to fans of the Metroidvania genre. Keep your eyes peeled for a firm release date. We’ll most definitely keep you looped.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore. Gamertag is neil363, feel free to add me to your list.
