The Defiant has been officially revealed, and it’s aiming to challenge how World War II is portrayed in video games.
Announced by publisher 4Divinity and developed by Hoothanes, this story-driven first-person shooter shifts the focus away from well-trodden European battlefields and into the rarely explored Asian theatre of the conflict.
Set during China’s War of Resistance against Japan, The Defiant places players into a brutal and often unseen chapter of WWII history, delivering a grounded, cinematic experience shaped by survival, resistance, and cultural identity.
The game is currently confirmed for PC via Steam and consoles (our fingers are crossed for Xbox and PlayStation), with wishlisting available right now on Steam.
Reframing World War II Through A New Lens
For decades, WWII shooters have returned to familiar settings – Normandy beaches, Western European cities, desert skirmishes. The Defiant deliberately breaks from tradition, exploring a vast and devastating conflict that cost millions of lives, yet has remained largely untouched by interactive entertainment.
Rather than focusing purely on spectacle, The Defiant seeks to reframe historical storytelling within the FPS genre, offering a perspective rooted in guerrilla warfare, occupation, and the human cost of resistance.
“The latest trailer for The Defiant captures exactly what 4Divinity represents,” said Sebastian Toke, Group CEO of GCL. “We are building a portfolio of bold, story-driven games that bring fresh perspectives to familiar genres. The Defiant shines a light on an important and rarely explored chapter of World War II, delivering a cinematic, authentic experience that reflects our commitment to supporting ambitious creators and meaningful storytelling.”
A Cinematic Campaign Built Around Survival And Resistance
At its core, The Defiant delivers a tightly focused single-player narrative that unfolds across a wide range of locations, including occupied rural villages, frozen forest regions, and the most fortified of supply routes.
In amongst that are combat encounters; designed to feel unpredictable and tense. Missions flow naturally between stealth infiltration, close-quarters firefights, long-range sniping, urban espionage, code-breaking sequences, vehicle-based combat, and sudden large-scale assaults.
There are no fixed frontlines here – just moments where planning, patience, and adaptability can be just as vital as firepower.
Authentic Weaponry With Historical Weight
Weapons in The Defiant are treated as more than simple tools of war. Each firearm is recreated with care, reflecting its historical context and real-world origins during China’s modern wartime era.
Confirmed weapons so far include the Hanyang Type 88, Mauser C96, and Bergmann submachine gun. And every weapon carries a sense of place and purpose, reinforcing the game’s focus on authenticity and emotional weight.
Built In Unreal Engine 5 With A Human-Centred Approach
Developed in Unreal Engine 5 by a veteran team of filmmakers and game developers, The Defiant adopts a restrained yet cinematic presentation. Rather than glorifying conflict, the game aims to explore the emotional cost of war, portraying individuals fighting for survival, identity, and homeland under extreme conditions.
The newly released trailer offers an early look at the game’s tone, environments, and combat, hinting at an experience shaped as much by history as it is by action.

A WWII Story That Hasn’t Been Told Before
With its focus on an underrepresented battlefield and a more thoughtful, human-centred approach to wartime storytelling, The Defiant is shaping up to be something genuinely different within the WWII FPS space.
While a release date has yet to be confirmed, the announcement alone marks this as a project worth keeping an eye on. If it delivers on its ambition, The Defiant could offer a powerful new way to experience one of history’s most devastating conflicts.
