ChainStaff – where survival depends on one weapon

Not every hero gets a clean start. In ChainStaff, yours begins with an alien latched onto your head and a planet that’s already gone sideways. It’s messy, strange, and more than a little brutal.

Now available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch for £12.49, the latest from Mommy’s Best Games throws you into a warped version of Earth where survival depends on mastering one seriously versatile weapon.

One Weapon, Endless Possibilities

The star of the show here is the ChainStaff itself.

It’s not just a weapon, it’s pretty much your entire toolkit. You can hurl it like a spear, slam it into the ground to block incoming attacks, or use it to grapple and swing through the environment. Everything revolves around how you use it, with a single-button system that keeps things accessible while still leaving room to experiment.

A World That’s Gone Completely Wrong

And experiment you’ll need to do too, as Earth isn’t what it used to be.

An alien force known as the Star Spores has twisted life into aggressive, mutated creatures, turning familiar environments into hostile territory. As you push through the game’s ten hand-crafted levels, you’ll face everything from strange bug-like enemies to screen-filling monstrosities that demand quick thinking and even quicker reactions.

It’s a world that feels unpredictable, where every new area throws something different your way.

Choices That Come With Consequences

ChainStaff isn’t just about combat. It also asks you to make some uncomfortable decisions.

Throughout your journey, you’ll come across stranded soldiers. You can rescue them, or you can follow the voice in your head and harvest them for upgrades. Each choice affects your abilities and ultimately shapes how your story plays out.

But this isn’t a forgiving game. Deaths come fast and often, sometimes in ways that are as gruesome as they are avoidable. But that’s part of the loop. Each failure teaches you something, whether it’s enemy behaviour, positioning or how best to use the ChainStaff in a tight situation.

A Rough Fight Worth Taking?

ChainStaff is fast, strange and a little unforgiving, built around a single idea and pushed as far as it can go. If you’re after something a bit different, something that rewards experimentation and doesn’t mind knocking you down a few times along the way, there’s plenty here to get stuck into.

Just don’t expect it to go easy on you.

If you think you have what it takes, pick up a copy of ChainStaff from the usual stores. We’ll send you the way of the Xbox Store where you can pick the game up for ÂŁ12.49.
