Few series carry the weight of gothic tragedy quite like Legacy of Kain, and now Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered invites players back into the cursed world of Nosgoth.

Available today on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC, this one comes in a variety of versions,

There’s a Standard Edition priced at £19.99 and a lore-heavy Deluxe Edition at £24.98, as Crystal Dynamics’ climactic chapter returns with modern enhancements while preserving the brooding identity that made it unforgettable.

For longtime fans, this is the long-awaited revival of a cult classic. For newcomers, it’s an opportunity to step into one of gaming’s most operatic tales of fate and free will.

Two Souls Bound By Fate

Defiance remains the dramatic convergence of two iconic figures: the vampire overlord Kain and his betrayed lieutenant Raziel. Their intertwined journeys, driven by vengeance, destiny and existential conflict, form the backbone of this dark fantasy epic.

Players switch between the two protagonists, each offering distinct combat styles and supernatural abilities. Kain’s raw vampiric power contrasts with Raziel’s spectral agility, creating varied encounters and puzzle solutions that reshape how Nosgoth is explored.

The story’s themes remain as compelling as ever, and the remaster ensures they are experienced with fresh clarity. We were mighty impressed with Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered back in 2024 and hope for more the same here.

Faithfully Remastered For Modern Platforms

Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered enhances the original with upgraded HD visuals, refined controls and a modernised camera system. Players can toggle between the classic presentation and the updated look at any time, offering a direct comparison between eras.

Character models, textures and environments have all been improved, while the new third-person camera option modernises traversal and combat. For purists, the original fixed camera remains available.

Additional features include:

  • Photo Mode
  • Alternate character skins inspired by series canon
  • A comprehensive lore reader
  • Unreleased content and restored ‘lost levels’

Deluxe Edition And The Heart Of Darkness Collection

The Deluxe Edition at £24.98 expands the experience further. It includes:

  • Dark Prophecy Demo – a playable slice of the cancelled sequel, offering a rare glimpse into what might have followed Defiance
  • Digital Comic Reader – featuring original tie-in comics, including one presented in English for the first time, complete with a new cover by original artist Tyler Kirkham
  • For those seeking the full Nosgoth experience, the Heart of Darkness Collection (£36.98) bundles Defiance Remastered Deluxe Edition with Legacy of Kain: Ascendance. The latter, a fast-paced 2D action platformer set in the same universe, arrives on March 31st 2026.

A Dark Fantasy Reborn

Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered is more than a nostalgia play. It’s the preservation of one of gaming’s most narratively ambitious series, rebuilt for modern hardware without losing its identity. We’ll find out how it all comes together in full review very soon.

For now, it is available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC, offering both returning players and curious newcomers a chance to witness the climactic struggle between Kain and Raziel in its definitive form.

Nosgoth still stands – ruined, cursed and unforgettable.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
