REPLACED – finally coming in 2026

The neon lights of Phoenix-City are finally flickering to life, and the long, agonising wait is almost over. After years of anticipation, delays, and breathtaking trailers that left us hungry for more, Sad Cat Studios and Thunderful have officially confirmed a concrete release date for REPLACED, their retro-futuristic masterpiece.

REPLACED will launch on March 12th, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and PC.

In the best news possible for subscribers who have held onto hope since the game’s initial reveal, it is also confirmed to be arriving day one on Xbox Game Pass.

A Journey Worth the Wait

The road to release for REPLACED has been undeniably rocky. We first covered the game way back in 2021 when it was originally unveiled, instantly falling in love with its stunning 2.5D pixel art style. Since then, the title has seen multiple delays due to real-world events impacting the studio, though enthusiasm remained high whenever new trailers surfaced, such as in 2022.

Now, the finish line is in sight. This release date announcement marks a major milestone for Sad Cat Studios, promising that the years of patience from the Xbox community are about to be rewarded with one of the most atmospheric and stylish action platformers of the generation.

Welcome to Phoenix-City: An Alt-1980s Nightmare

REPLACED drops players into a gritty, alternative version of 1980s America that has been ravaged by a nuclear catastrophe. Amidst the corruption and decay lies Phoenix-City, a fortified stronghold ruled by the sinister Phoenix Corporation. Here, outlaws thrive, and human life is a commodity traded like currency.

You are not a typical hero. You play as R.E.A.C.H., an artificial intelligence that has been trapped against its will inside a human body. Your quest is one of survival and discovery as you attempt to adjust to human life, uncover the purpose behind your creation, and expose the dark secrets of the corporation that made you.

Cinematic Combat and Pixel-Perfect Style

The game is a cinematic 2.5D action platformer that blends exploration with high-intensity combat.

  • Fluid Combat: You’ll need to master a fast and responsive combat system, chaining together precise melee strikes with ranged attacks to take down the dangerous inhabitants of Phoenix-City.
  • A Living World: Run, climb, and fight your way through crumbling districts and neon-lit alleys. The world is brought to life with hand-crafted pixel art enhanced by modern visual effects, creating a unique “retro-future” aesthetic that is simply unmatched.
  • Deep Narrative: Explore complex themes of identity, control, and what it means to be human in a world pushed to its absolute limits.

A Word from the Director

Game Director Yura Zhdanovich expressed relief and gratitude at finally being able to set a date.

It feels great to finally have a set date for the release of REPLACED,” said Zhdanovich. “It’s no secret that it’s taken longer for us to get here than we initially thought and we want to thank everyone for your continued patience and support. We’re looking forward to making it worth your while on March 12th!

The calendar is marked, and the AI is booting up. REPLACED is shaping up to be the indie darling of 2026, blending style, substance, and a gripping sci-fi mystery.

Prepare to enter Phoenix-City this March.
