The Monty Mole Collection Launches On Xbox And PC With Six Retro Classics

The Monty Mole Collection has arrived on Xbox Series X|S and PC, giving a classic slice of British gaming history a fresh lease of life. Priced at £6.99, this lovingly assembled package brings together six Monty Mole games, reviving a series that once burrowed its way into countless home computers during the 1980s.

This one has been put together by Imagine Software, previously behind the likes of The Epyx Collection.

For players who grew up with rubber-keyed micros – or those curious about where British platforming found its early personality – this is a surprisingly rich trip back in time.

A Very British Platforming Legend

Monty Mole isn’t your typical videogame hero. He’s a coal-stealing subterranean mammal turned international fugitive, whose troubles began during a brutally cold winter in South Yorkshire.

What followed was a globe-trotting escape from the authorities, shaped by satire, social commentary, and some wonderfully odd platforming ideas.

Created by Peter Harrap while still a teenager, the series drew inspiration from the UK mining strikes of the mid-1980s, giving Monty’s adventures a uniquely British edge that still feels distinctive today.

Six Games, One Chaotic Mole

The Core Trilogy

At the heart of the collection are the three main Monty Mole games that defined the series. Wanted! Monty Mole kicks things off with Monty’s infamous coal raid, sending him into battle with flying pickets, bizarre hazards, and a castle-bound final showdown.

Monty on the Run sees Monty attempting to flee the country after being broken out of prison, while Auf Wiedersehen Monty expands the scope even further, chasing freedom across Europe as Intermole closes in.

The Bonus Oddities

Alongside the main trilogy, the collection includes three additional games that flesh out Monty’s world. Monty is Innocent hands control to Sam Stoat in a prison break rescue mission, while Sam Stoat: Safebreaker gives the mustelid miscreant a solo adventure of his own.

Rounding things out is Moley Christmas, a wonderfully meta seasonal game originally bundled with a magazine, in which Monty delivers the very game you’re playing as a Christmas gift.

Old-School Challenge, Preserved

These are unapologetically old-school platformers, built around precise movement, pattern learning, and a willingness to try again after failure. The difficulty can be sharp by modern standards, but that’s part of the charm – and the collection preserves that original design without sanding off the edges.

Having previously released on Steam and Nintendo Switch, this Xbox and PC arrival finally makes the Monty Mole saga accessible to a new audience on Microsoft platforms.

Key Features At A Glance

  • Six classic Monty Mole games from the 1980s
  • Includes the full trilogy plus three bonus titles
  • A uniquely British platforming series inspired by real-world events
  • Old-school challenge with preserved original design

A Proper Retro Dig

The Monty Mole Collection isn’t just a nostalgia bundle – it’s a snapshot of a very specific era in British game development, when humour, politics, and platforming collided in strange and memorable ways.

Whether you’re revisiting Monty’s misadventures or meeting him for the first time, this collection proves that some classics are still worth unearthing.

The Monty Mole Collection is on the Xbox Store, available for play right now on Xbox Series X|S and PC for £6.99.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore. Gamertag is neil363, feel free to add me to your list.
