Fatal Frame II Crimson Butterfly Remake – coming in 2026

The most terrifying game of tag in history is about to be reborn.

KOEI TECMO and Team NINJA have officially announced that FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE will be scaring a whole new generation on March 12th, 2026.

This full, ground-up remake of the 2003 horror classic is coming to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, with pre-orders live now.

Revealed with a haunting new trailer, this is not just a simple port. It’s a complete overhaul of one of the most celebrated Japanese horror adventures ever made, rebuilt with enhanced graphics, sound, and a host of new gameplay mechanics.

A Classic Horror Reborn

FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE is a full remake of the second instalment in the legendary FATAL FRAME (also known as PROJECT ZERO) series.

This one has undergone a complete graphical overhaul, with refined textures and striking lighting and shadow contrast, to create a more realistic and haunting atmosphere than ever before.

The sound has also been completely revamped to offer spatial audio, immersing you deep in the action. This isn’t just for atmosphere; wraiths will now appear when least expected, even trying to grab your hands as you reach for an item. Failure to react will inflict “Willpower Damage,” leading directly to intense combat.

Mastering the Camera Obscura (Again)

The Camera Obscura, the FATAL FRAME franchise’s signature feature, has been reworked to offer a more intense and rich combat experience.

  • Aligning Focus Points: You can still attack wraiths by taking photos, but now, aligning the camera’s focus points with your target will inflict significantly more damage.
  • Shutter Chance: After dealing enough damage to a spirit, you can activate a “Shutter Chance” state, allowing you to deal massive damage with one single, perfectly timed picture.
  • Fatal Frame & Fatal Time: A perfectly timed shot will trigger a “Fatal Frame,” which stuns your ghostly opponent. The ultimate move, however, is triggering a Fatal Frame during a Shutter Chance state. This will activate “Fatal Time,” a limited window that allows you to take several shots in quick succession for devastating damage.

New Tools for Survival

Your trusty camera has also been upgraded with new features for both combat and exploration. You can now use focus, zoom, and filters to survive the terrors of Minakami Village. The zoom feature, for example, can be used to attack a spirit from a distance while you remain undetected.

A new Paraceptual Filter will allow you to increase your shooting distance in combat, but more importantly, it will allow you to see residual memories during exploration, reproducing past actions to help you unravel the mysteries around you.

The game also introduces other new mechanics, such as the ability to hold your twin sister Mayu’s hand, which will recover your Health and Spirit Power. However, this comes with a risk: if Mayu is in danger, she may stumble and fall, requiring you to stop and help her back up. You will also be able to collect and equip Charms to gain various beneficial effects.

Pre-Orders and Special Editions

Pre-orders for the game are now live on PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam (with Switch 2 pre-orders starting at a later date).

  • Digital Deluxe Edition: Includes the base game, a Digital Soundtrack, a Digital Art Book, a Deluxe Charm, and costumes for the protagonists, Mio and Mayu.
  • Early Purchase Bonus: Players who purchase the game before March 25th, 2026, will receive the Wraith Charm and a set of Peony Hair Ornaments and Kimonos.
  • Digital Pre-order Bonus: Players who pre-order the game digitally before its March 12th launch will receive the Spirit Charm, a set of Cat Ears, and the original Crimson Butterfly costumes for Mio and Mayu.

The lost village of Minakami is waiting to claim new victims, and the Crimson Butterfly is ready to take flight once more. For fans of classic Japanese horror, this is a dream (or nightmare) come true. Prepare to face your fears when FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE launches on March 12th, 2026.
