Frostpunk 2 – now on Game Pass

Frostpunk 2, the next chapter in the brutal and brilliant city-survival saga, which has already received critical acclaim from PC players, has just brought its chilling wail to Xbox, Game Pass and PS5.

Frostpunk 2, the latest installment in the award-winning franchise, has launched today, 18th September 2025. This new title from developer and publisher 11 bit studios is now available on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. It follows on from the original Frostpunk.

You can purchase the Standard Edition for ÂŁ37.99, but in the biggest news for subscribers, it has also dropped Day One on Xbox Game Pass, AND it has Play Anywhere support.

A New Level of City-Survival

Frostpunk 2 elevates the genre to a new level. Taking place in a post-apocalyptic, snowy setting, you will take on the role of a Steward, tasked with leading your city through a cascade of calamities. You must build large city districts, navigate the conflicting interests of the factions that populate your metropolis, and steer your society towards an uncertain future.

Check out the chilling console launch trailer here…

The City Must Grow

In a world overtaken by an ever-present winter, the expansion of your city is the only way for mankind to survive. You will need to build new districts for housing and resource extraction, ensuring they all work in perfect unison. You’ll also need to build special locations like the City Hall and the Research Institute to put forth new laws and forge the city’s future.

This time, the challenge is not just the cold; it’s the people. Your citizens will form communities and factions, each with different ideas for the city’s future. In the Council Hall, you will need to negotiate new laws with the faction delegates, but be warned: the support of one faction will breed discontent among the others.

Two Ways to Rule

The game features a multi-chapter saga in its Story Mode, which spans the life of the Steward and lets you feel the true burden of leadership. For those who want boundless social and infrastructural experiments, the sandbox mode, Utopia Builder, offers infinite playtime.

This isn’t just a simple port. Frostpunk 2 has been redesigned for consoles to put the power, and its consequences, directly in players’ hands. The game features a tailored UI and all-new radial menus to – hopefully – ensure a smooth and intuitive transition to a gamepad.

Our Verdict: A Fun, Flawed, but Unique RTS

We’ve already had the chance to brave the frozen wastes. In our full 3.5/5 review of Frostpunk 2, we found a fun and challenging game at its core, but were hampered by some technical issues:

“It’s unfortunate because the foundation of Frostpunk 2 is fun and challenging. Managing resources and relationships throughout the campaign is a satisfying process, and the story itself is engaging. But the performance issues on Xbox bring the experience down significantly… if you are patient, the game itself is fun and does have a lot of positives.“

Choose Your Path: Editions Explained

You can start your new society today with two different digital editions:

  • Standard Edition (ÂŁ37.99 or via Game Pass): Includes the full base game.
  • Deluxe Edition (ÂŁ62.99): Includes the full game, 3 future DLCs, an exclusive in-game item, a digital version of the novella “Warm Flesh,” and the digital artbook and soundtrack.

Key Features

  • The Sequel to the Critically Acclaimed City-Survival Game: Elevates the genre to a new level.
  • A New Focus on Social Dilemmas: Navigate the conflicting interests of different factions in the Council Hall.
  • Two Main Game Modes: A multi-chapter narrative Story Mode and an endless sandbox Utopia Builder mode.
  • Redesigned for Console: Features a tailored UI and all-new radial menus for a smooth gamepad experience.
  • Available Day One on Game Pass.

The sirens are wailing and a new, even tougher challenge has begun. If you’re a fan of deep, complex city-builders and are ready to face not just the cold, but the complexities of human nature, Frostpunk 2 is ready for you on the Xbox Store right now. You’ll also find it on the Playstation Store, or Steam.
