The Original Stealth Master Returns
Long before stealth became a staple of modern gaming, Thief was showing players that avoiding a fight could be far more rewarding than charging into one.
Originally developed by Looking Glass Studios, the game introduced mechanics that many stealth titles still rely on today. Light and shadow weren’t simply visual effects – they were survival tools. Every footstep mattered, every creaking floorboard could betray your position, and every successful mission felt earned.
Players once again take on the role of Garrett, a cynical but highly skilled master thief who navigates a city rife with corruption, secrets and political intrigue. Trained by the mysterious Keepers before striking out on his own, Garrett’s adventures blend burglary, conspiracy and supernatural threats into one of gaming’s most memorable immersive sims.
Modern Upgrades Without Losing The Soul
Nightdive Studios has rebuilt the experience using its KEX Engine, delivering visual improvements while keeping the gameplay systems that made the original such a classic intact.
Enhanced textures, improved character models, updated cutscenes and refined animations headline the visual upgrades, while a redesigned interface introduces features including a weapon and item wheel alongside a modern mission selector.
PC players will also benefit from support for fan-created campaigns, opening the door to years of community-created content.
Stephen Kick, CEO at Nightdive Studios, explained: “Thief didn’t just introduce stealth mechanics, it defined them. With this remaster, we’ve preserved the tension and intelligence of the original while enhancing it for modern players, ensuring that its legacy continues to influence how stealth games are played today.“
Shadows, Sound And Player Freedom
What helped Thief stand apart from its contemporaries was its commitment to player agency.
Rather than relying on scripted sequences, missions encourage experimentation and creativity. Guards react to sounds, investigate disturbances and communicate with one another, while Garrett can use an extensive toolkit that includes rope arrows, lockpicks, gas mines, flashbombs and noisemaker arrows.
The remaster retains all of these systems, alongside the advanced visibility and sound mechanics that helped establish Thief as one of gaming’s first true immersive sims.
Patrice Baig, General Manager at Eidos-MontrĂ©al, reflected on the game’s lasting influence: “Few games have had an impact as enduring as Thief. It set a standard for immersion and atmospheric storytelling that still resonates today. This remaster ensures a new generation can experience what made it so influential, and we’re proud to see it treated with such care.“
A Genre-Defining Classic Returns
The influence of Thief can still be seen throughout modern gaming, from stealth-focused franchises to immersive first-person adventures built around player choice and environmental interaction.
This winter, Garrett will once again emerge from the shadows when Thief: The Dark Project Remastered launches on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Play Anywhere, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG.

Well Nightdive is doing it again. With a few exceptions all the best games I played in the past couple of years have been from Nightdive.
