TimeSplitters acquired by Koch Media

-

Koch Media and their publishing label Deep Silver have today announced the acquisition of two key IPs from the early 2000s: Second Sight and TimeSplitters.

Both originally created by Free Radical Design – a games studio created by former members of Rare – this acquisition sees the IPs going full circle as Free Radical Design became Crytek UK which was succeeded by Dambuster Studios, a studio set up by Deep Silver.

TimeSplitters is a game that should need no introduction. Originally released in 2000 on the Playstation 2, the quirky FPS spawned two sequels which also launched on Xbox and Nintendo GameCube: TimeSplitters 2 in 2002 and TimeSplitters: Future Perfect in 2005. The series was known for its’ fast-paced arcade style FPS and hilariously diverse character line-up, including zombies, aliens, monkeys (which were banned in our games due to their size advantage), gingerbread men, snowmen, robots, clowns, dinosaurs, bears and humans from all walks of life, from Aztecs to 25th Century space explorers.

Second Sight, released in 2004, was a much more story-based game featuring more stealthy mechanics compared to TimeSplitters. Players controlled a parapsychology researcher who wakes up with no memory of their past but has gained some seriously impressive psychic abilities with more unlockable as progress is made.

“We are hugely excited to have acquired TimeSplitters” commented Klemens Kundratitz, CEO Koch Media GmbH “The original games gave fans a massive content offer and provided a pure and genuinely fun arcade shooter experience. We have many fans of the TimeSplitters series among our own staff who are passionate about creating a product that will thrill todays gaming audience.”

At this stage it is unknown what Koch Media and Deep Silver intend to do with these acquisitions, whether they update the existing games or relaunch them. But the news that these franchises are no longer in limbo is enough to get fans licking their lips once again at the chaos and hilarity from a couch co-op game on TimeSplitters, or the dark and broody atmosphere in Second Sight. All we are told is that further details “will be revealed in due course”.

So, what were your experiences of either of these games? Will you be hoping for HD releases of the existing games or something new entirely? As always, let us know in the comments below! I’m off to dust off my PlayStation 2 and multi-tap!
