Top PC Games That Rookies Should Get into

-

Getting into gaming has never been easier. With thousands of titles and dozens of different genres, anyone can find something suitable for them.

And over the past couple of years, the industry’s exploded even more – there are more games, genres, platforms, and gaming distribution services than ever before. In 2020, there were over 10 thousand games released on Steam alone. But, of course, since there are so many games to browse through, it might be difficult to find something specifically for you.

If you want to skip catching up on thousands of pages of lore, avoid getting called “noob” every other minute, and just get straight to gaming, you’ll need a little bit of help.

Let’s look at some rookie-friendly PC games that’ll introduce you to the gaming community and help you level up in no time.

Firewatch

Firewatch is among the simplest yet most intriguing adventure games you could get into as a rookie. It doesn’t require any pro equipment – any PC can easily support it – and it doesn’t require a significant time investment. The entire game won’t take you more than a couple of hours to complete.

You’ll take on the role of Henry, who’s just started a summer job as a fire lookout in Wyoming in the Shoshone National Forest. Communicating via walkie-talkie with the supervisor Delilah, you’ll explore the forest and try to find out what sinister secrets it hides.

Minecraft

Even those who’ve never even played the iconic Solitaire have at least heard of Minecraft. It’s the most popular game online, with over 600 million players worldwide as of 2020.

It’s a sandbox game where your only limit is your imagination. At the start of the game, you’ll be dropped into a 3D world where you’ll get to explore the surroundings, collect building materials, fight zombies, grow plants and animals, and more. There are no specific goals or objectives, but you can enjoy all the different mods that you can get via Minecraft Forge.

GTA

Grand Theft Auto is the legendary action-adventure originally released back in 1997. The epic title has several main series and countless expansion packs and additional games, each suitable for rookie and pro gamers alike.

Regardless of whether you go for the classic GTA: Vice City or the newest GTA V, you’ll get to play a criminal who’s trying to rise through the ranks. Complete tasks, wander through the city, drive around, and have some fun.

If you’re feeling nostalgic for old-school games, you can get started with Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy and revisit Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas.

The Last of Us

The Last of Us is a bit more serious game but still suitable for newcomers. It’s an action-adventure that places you in the post-apocalyptic US and has you fighting mutated humans (effectively zombies), terrorists, and more.

You’ll take on the role of the smuggler Joel, who tries to survive the infection that’s ravaging the US while keeping a girl named Ellie safe. Of course, it would be a crime, not to mention the mesmerizing atmosphere of the game.

Hearthstone

Hearthstone is a digital collectible card game that’s set in the Warcraft universe (but doesn’t require you to have much Warcraft experience). It’s a turn-based game where you’ll get to battle another player using the cards you have in your hand. Each card grants unique abilities, spells, and weapons that you can use to bring your opponent’s health down.

Hearthstone requires some strategic thinking, and it can be exceptionally challenging. However, it’s easy to get into and surprisingly rookie friendly.

Gaming tips for rookie players

Regardless of which genre you’d like to try your hand at, there are a few universal tips you’ll want to keep in mind while gaming.

Check system requirements

Although PC gaming allows you to minimize your expenses (since you don’t have to buy specific consoles and peripherals), it can be a bit more complicated than it first appears. If you have an older PC, low-quality hardware, or weak graphics, you might not be able to play every game.

You’ll always want to check the game’s system requirements and see whether your computer can run it before investing your money.

Invest in better bandwidth

If you play online multiplayer games, you’ll want to invest in a better bandwidth that will support your gameplay. Higher bandwidth means that you can send and receive data faster, preventing lags and allowing you to have a seamless gaming experience.

Of course, do not rush to negotiate new plans with your Internet Service Provider (ISP). It might be that the provider is the reason your game slows down randomly. After all, ISPs are known to interrupt performance for clients engaging in highly bandwidth-heavy activities.

At times it might be minimal, but it could also make your gaming experience unbearable. You can avoid this by using a VPN for Windows, which will encrypt your entire internet traffic. What does this do? Well, your ISP will no longer see what you are doing. Thus, it will not know when you are engaging in bandwidth-heavy activities.

Final thoughts

Although getting into the gaming world seems overwhelming at first, it’s not as bad as you might think. There are plenty of games out there suitable for everyone’s tastes, preferences, and skill levels. So, don’t be afraid to get started.
