Total Chaos New Game+ mode is here!
Total Chaos New Game+ mode is here!

Just when you thought the nightmare was over, Total Chaos is dragging players back into the Game Pass darkness.

The acclaimed psychological horror title from Apogee Entertainment and developer Sam Prebble has just received a massive New Game+ update, bringing a far more punishing experience to those brave enough to return to Fort Oasis.

Available now as a free update across PC, Xbox Series X|S, Game Pass and PlayStation 5, the new mode isn’t simply a replay of the same experience. Instead, it twists the original adventure into a more aggressive and unpredictable nightmare, adding new locations, expanded story elements, a fresh ending and a terrifying new stalker that will relentlessly hunt players throughout their journey.

In short, the horror of Total Chaos has evolved.

A Survival Horror Experience Turned Up To Eleven

For players who already survived the horrors of Fort Oasis, the new Game+ mode is designed to test their nerves even further.

Rather than simply replaying the original campaign with stronger enemies, New Game+ reimagines the first seven chapters of the game, transforming familiar environments into far more hostile territory. Enemy encounters are more aggressive, supplies are scarcer and mistakes are punished much more quickly.

The update culminates in an entirely new finale: Chapter 8 – Reckoning, a previously unseen chapter that pushes the story beyond its original ending.

It’s not just a harder mode either. You should see this as an expanded version of the experience.

Meet The Hunter

Perhaps the most unsettling addition in the New Game+ update is a relentless new enemy known only as The Hunter.

Unlike traditional enemies that can be avoided or defeated, The Hunter acts as a persistent stalker. Once he finds you, there is no stopping him, survival becomes a matter of quick thinking, smart navigation and sheer panic-driven decision making.

The presence of this new threat ensures that even players familiar with the game’s environments will feel constantly on edge.

New Story Content And Alternate Ending

Beyond the gameplay challenge, the New Game+ update also expands the narrative of Total Chaos.

A new ending now extends the story beyond its original conclusion, shedding additional light on the events surrounding Fort Oasis and the protagonist’s descent into the island’s madness.

This expanded storytelling adds fresh context to the already unsettling narrative, giving returning players a new reason to revisit the eerie ruins and uncover more of the island’s secrets.

Additional Features And Improvements

The update doesn’t just add new gameplay content. A number of quality-of-life improvements and extra features have also been included.

These additions include:

  • A Retro Tyler voice option, referencing the original DOOM II total conversion mod
  • Four additional save slots, bringing the total to eight
  • Improved performance mode framerates
  • New enemy-specific death animations
  • Expanded language localisation support

From Mod To Modern Horror

Total Chaos has had an unusual journey to success.

Originally created as an ambitious total conversion mod for DOOM II, the project evolved into a fully fledged standalone survival horror experience. Drawing inspiration from classic genre staples while building its own oppressive atmosphere, the game quickly gained attention after its surprise reveal during the Xbox Partner Preview.

The eerie setting of Fort Oasis, a once-thriving mining community turned decaying wasteland, remains one of the game’s strongest elements.

Even in our own review, we noted that despite the brutal challenge, “Total Chaos is a disorientating tale of mystery, horror and survival… a desperate struggle against insanity itself.”

The Nightmare Continues

For players who thought they had escaped the horrors of Fort Oasis, the arrival of New Game+ proves that Total Chaos isn’t done with you yet.

With a relentless new enemy, expanded story content and an entirely new chapter waiting at the end, the update offers a brutal new way to experience the psychological horror adventure.

And if the original journey through Fort Oasis left you shaken, the remixed nightmare of New Game+ is ready to test your sanity all over again.

Download Total Chaos from the likes of the Xbox Store, through Game Pass if you like.
