Many games have tried, to differing levels of success, to set a game in one of the most uncharted areas known to man – the human mind. Psychonauts, of course, is the key player here, but Figment: Journey Into the Mind is vying for the top spot with its ingenious puzzles.
Finally making its way over to Xbox, following an original debut on PC in 2017, then a port to Switch in 2018, and then a move over to PlayStation in 2019, Bedtime Digital Games’ title is a musical action-adventure set within the deepest recesses of our brains.
Such a world is known as Figment, full of the totally abstract, odd and irregular. Nothing is of course as it seems, but it has only been in recent times that this mind has started to be corrupted by nightmarish thoughts. And these thoughts have manifested as equally terrifying creatures, threatening to take over the once peaceful land.
You’ll be joining Dusty – the former voice of courage, who has since lost any ounce of such – and his companion Piper on an adventure through Figment, disposing of any nightmare creatures that stand in your way. Whether you are slashing your sword around to kill foes, or using your actual brain (how meta!) to solve some of the puzzles found throughout, all will be accompanied by a beautiful rhythmic score that is an integral part of the game, showing as singing enemies, trumpet trees and the like. Some of the best set pieces in Figment: Journey Into the Mind combine combat and music, in triumphant musical boss battles.
The hand-drawn art style is similarly colourful and upbeat, save for some of the more dark and depressing areas, with the visuals immediately bringing the likes of Bastion to mind.
