Turbo Overkill – finally on Xbox

Hold onto your cybernetic implants and get ready for a blood-soaked, adrenaline-fuelled thrill ride as Turbo Overkill finally hits Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.

Apogee Entertainment and Trigger Happy Interactive are unleashing Turbo Overkill, a critically acclaimed cyberpunk boomer shooter, on consoles today.

This hyper-fast-paced FPS, which has already garnered over 5,000 “overwhelmingly positive” reviews on Steam and an impressive Metacritic score of 87 on PC, is now available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.

A Symphony of Cyberpunk Carnage

As we experienced in our hands-on preview back in 2022, Turbo Overkill is a “rejuvenation of the original 3D first-person shooter,” blending classic FPS mechanics with modern sensibilities and a cyberpunk aesthetic that’s both gritty and stylish.

Now, console players can finally experience the game’s “solid shooting mechanics,” “modern flourishes,” and “violently delightful” gameplay that PC gamers have been raving about.

Become Johnny Turbo, the Chainsaw-Legged Cyborg

In Turbo Overkill, you take on the role of Johnny Turbo, a cybernetically enhanced mercenary with a chainsaw for a leg and a thirst for vengeance.

Returning to his hometown of Paradise, Johnny discovers a city overrun by Syn, a rogue AI, and its army of augmented minions. With a hefty bounty on Syn’s head and a chance to escape his troubled past, Johnny embarks on a mission to destroy the AI and restore order to Paradise.

Features That Will Make You Go Cyberpsycho

  • Turbo Time: Activate Turbo Time™, a unique slow-motion mechanic that allows you to react quickly, dodge bullets, and line up the perfect headshot.
  • Acrobatic Movement: Master the art of wall-running, dashing, and grappling-hook swinging to navigate the cyberpunk cityscape with style and speed.
  • Chainsaw Carnage: Slide on your chainsaw leg to eviscerate enemies and open up bosses for critical damage.
  • Arsenal of Destruction: Wield a variety of over-the-top weapons, including twin magnums with lock-on capabilities, a boomer shotgun with a grenade launcher attachment, and the teleporting Telefragger sniper rifle.
  • Intense Level Design: Blast your way through 24 stages packed with secrets, bonus arenas, and challenging combat puzzles.
  • Collectibles and Modifiers: Discover game-changing collectibles that unlock punishing modifiers, increasing the difficulty and rewarding skilled players.

A Cyberpunk World of Blood and Neon

Turbo Overkill immerses players in a visually stunning cyberpunk world, with detailed environments, atmospheric lighting, and a vibrant colour palette. The game’s art style blends retro influences with modern technology, creating a unique and captivating aesthetic.

The game features an eccentric cast of characters brought to life by talented voice actors, including Patricia Summersett (Princess Zelda from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild), Gianni Matragrano (Ultrakill, Neon White), and the legendary Jon St. John (Duke Nukem).

Enhanced for Consoles

The console release of Turbo Overkill boasts upgraded visuals, improved performance, and a new “Enhanced Visuals” mode for the PC version.

Black Sheep Studio, the team behind the port, has meticulously optimised the game for consoles, ensuring a smooth and exhilarating experience for players.

Following Turbo Overkill’s successful launch on PC, we’ve been hard at work alongside our porting team Black Sheep Studio to bring the fast-paced, cyberpunk gun-slinging action to consoles,” said Sam Prebble, lead developer. “Fans of Turbo are going to be impressed by the console ports, and newcomers to the franchise will discover all of the game’s high-octane thrills.

Scott Miller, CEO of Apogee Entertainment, praised Sam’s exceptional talent: “I’ve worked with the founders of Id Software, Remedy Entertainment, and talented developers on projects like Duke Nukem 3D, but I’ve never seen anyone like Sam. He built Turbo Overkill from the ground up, practically alone, and he did it with incredible speed and quality. He’s truly one of a kind.”

Deluxe Edition and Prequel Comic

In addition to the Standard Edition, a Turbo Overkill Digital Deluxe Edition will launch in March, featuring a 140-page digital artbook and a soundtrack sampler.

Players who purchase the Standard Edition can upgrade to the Deluxe Edition. A free prequel comic, with cover art by Eisner Award-winning artist Dave Johnson, will also be available, delving deeper into the lore of Turbo Overkill.

Turbo Overkill is available now on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. We’ll send you the way of the Xbox Store where it’ll cost you £16.74.

Stay tuned for our full review. We’ll let you know whether it is worth your time experiencing the adrenaline-pumping action, mastering the art of cybernetic combat, and becoming the ultimate badass in this cyberpunk FPS!

Turbo Overkill Description

Turbo Overkill is the most savage FPS ever released by Apogee. You play as Johnny Turbo, augmented with hidden arm rockets and a chainsaw that extends from your lower leg allowing you to slide-slice enemies wide open. Johnny returns to his hometown of Paradise and finds its entire population possessed by Syn, a rogue AI, and its army of augmented minions. Desperate for enough money to outrun his past mistakes, Johnny takes on the impossible job of destroying the greatest AI ever created. Rival bounty hunters want to claim the prize first. Nothing is easy in paradise.
