The official keyart for the World War Z x The Walking Dead expansion
World War Z x The Walking Dead crossover brings Rick, Daryl, Michonne, and Negan into explosive co-op battles against Walkers across iconic locations.

The zombie apocalypse just got even more crowded – World War Z x The Walking Dead is live today, colliding two of the most recognisable undead universes into a brand-new crossover campaign.

Available across Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation, and PC, this DLC drops players straight into AMC’s iconic world, reimagined through the chaos and scale of Saber Interactive’s co-op shooter.

If you already own World War Z, this crossover episode delivers a fresh story, new enemies, and some unmistakably familiar faces – all wrapped in a grim fight for survival.

Legendary Survivors Step Into The Swarm

This crossover puts the spotlight firmly on The Walking Dead’s most iconic characters. Players can take control of Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon, Michonne, and Negan, each armed with their trademark weapons and personalities as they face overwhelming odds.

Their journey unfolds across three bespoke story chapters, each inspired by classic locations from the TV series. Expect desperate stand-offs in The Prison, tense encounters within the Alexandria Safe Zone, and a brutal push through Grady Memorial Hospital, where the dead refuse to stay down and safety is always temporary.

Walkers Change The Rules Of Engagement

Unlike the fast-moving Zekes World War Z fans are used to, this DLC introduces Walker-inspired enemies that move more deliberately – but don’t mistake that for weakness. These undead punish poor positioning and reckless pushes, forcing squads to rethink their approach.

The danger escalates further with the arrival of the Spiked Walker, a new special enemy variant. Armoured and resistant to melee attacks while standing, these monsters must be knocked to the ground before finishing them off, creating intense moments of teamwork under pressure.

Signature Weapons From The Walking Dead

Combat also gets a thematic overhaul thanks to new weapons and cosmetic additions drawn straight from the show:

  • Michonne’s Katana, perfect for precise and deadly close combat
  • Negan’s Bat “Lucille”, delivering heavy, crushing blows
  • Rick’s Revolver skin, an instantly recognisable sidearm
  • Daryl’s Crossbow skin, ideal for controlled, methodical play

What’s Included In World War Z x The Walking Dead

Here’s a quick snapshot of what this crossover DLC brings to the table:

  • A new crossover story campaign set in The Walking Dead universe
  • Three story chapters based on iconic locations
  • Four playable characters: Rick, Daryl, Michonne, and Negan
  • New Walker enemy variants
  • New special enemy: Spiked Walker
  • Two melee weapons and two weapon skins
  • Full solo and four-player co-op support with crossplay
  • The World War Z base game is required to access this content.

A Natural Evolution Of World War Z

When we reviewed World War Z back in 2019, we described it as “lots of fun and easy to pick up and play”, praising its accessible co-op action and satisfying zombie combat. This crossover feels like a confident evolution of that foundation, swapping sheer speed for tension while retaining the spectacle the game is known for.

Powered by Saber’s Swarm Engine, the DLC can be tackled solo with AI teammates or cooperatively with friends, making it easy to jump in regardless of how you prefer to play.

A Crossover That Earns Its Place

World War Z x The Walking Dead goes beyond surface-level fan service. By introducing new enemy behaviours, iconic characters, and recognisable locations, it delivers a crossover that feels purposeful rather than forced.

For fans of either franchise, it’s a compelling reason to return to the apocalypse – and a reminder that the undead threat is far from over.
