Unholy breaks out onto Xbox and PlayStation

What is it about us gamers that makes us continually lap up psychological horror games? We don’t have the answer to that, but what we do know is that Unholy is now on Xbox and PlayStation. Ready for some more scares?

Available to purchase and download right now, either from the Xbox Store as you play on Xbox Series X|S, or the PlayStation Store for PS5 folk, is Unholy. It’s the creation of Duality Games as they send players into a deeply frightening world that is utterly surreal.

Unholy plays out on console

We first heard of Unholy back in 2022, as the team behind it planned for a 2023 launch. Delays happen, we see that on a regular basis, and that means it’s taken until now to get Unholy pushed out to a console audience. It did however see that 2023 launch occur on PC, with ‘Mixed’ reviews on Steam.

Unholy looks to be one that will fit in well with Xbox and PlayStation gamers. Dive in and you’ll discover the chance to explore a couple or worlds, running parallel. It’s here where the brutalist reality of a post-Soviet Eastern European town combines with the dark, grotesque world of Unholy, ruled by a merciless caste of priests.

Your job is to navigate the realms, hunting for clues and solving mind-bending puzzles. Oh, and you’ll also want to make a decision on whether to infiltrate the nightmarish reality with stealth, or to engage in full on brutal combat against the twisted denizens that rule the two worlds.Unholy allows for both approaches.

Key Features:

  • Emotional Weaponry: Harness emotions—anger, fear, sadness, and desire—to manipulate your environment, solve puzzles, and confront enemies in inventive ways.
  • Masks of Deception: In a world where everyone hides behind a mask, craft and wear different masks to gain new skills, impersonate enemies, and survive the horrors of Unholy.
  • Explore Two Distinct Worlds: Traverse between a cold, brutalist reality and the disturbing, twisted society of Unholy, each filled with unique challenges and mysteries.
  • Innovative Gameplay Mechanics: Blend exploration, puzzle-solving, stealth, and combat in a seamless and terrifying experience.
  • Unsettling Visuals and Narrative: Dive into a disturbing story brought to life by the art of Tomasz Strzałkowski, delivering a uniquely chilling atmosphere that keeps you on edge.

“We wanted to create a game that goes beyond the terrifying and frightening layer of gameplay, but also deeply engages players with its story and world,” said Tomasz Strzałkowski, CEO and the artistic mind behind Unholy at Duality Games. “Unholy is a personal journey that blends psychological horror with refreshing gameplay mechanics in the genre, and we can’t wait for players to finally experience it on console.”

Buy now!

You’ll find Unholy on the Xbox Store, playable on Xbox Series X|S for £16.74. Expect similar for PS5 from the PlayStation Store

Please note, Unholy is making the most of the power of Series X|S and as such you cannot play on Xbox One.

Stay tuned for our review. We’re gonna switch off the lights and scare ourselves silly.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
